Butterfly II Bridge

Our very own Kliminfool machines the bars. I bought a pair from him a while ago. One is set up a single ascender since I srt. The other one is setup with a pair of CMIs I like the compact units.

The bars have nothing to do with how "safe" the unit is. If they were used for uppers you'd be clipping into the bottom hole of the ascender. All the bars are for is to grab.

Jeff Jepson made up a nice collapsible set. The bars were made of tubing. One side had a piece of threaded rod inserted and the other was tapped on the inside. When they weren't being used the bar would unscrew and collapse. Think of how a silencer is screwed onto the end of a gun barrel.

Regarding the bridge of the saddle, I thought I'd share with y'all the last three bridges I used.

The top one in the photo is one I had for a couple months. It's Yalex. It worked fine, but because it is a loose rope, I was splicing something so short, and the application caused to rope to be constantly bent at various angles, the tips of the buried, tapered tails were popping out the rope. The cover strands were still undamaged- but the whole thing was unsightly. Not only that, if something DID happen to the cover strands, I might not notice it thinking it was just core strands popping out. So that had to go.

I switched to the next one on the list. A 22kN presewn sling. I sewed the ends down to form tight eyes. This worked fine with 2 exceptions: 1- it was a bit too long. 2- when the carabiners would run over the bar-tacked/sewn area, there was a bit of resistance. Not that big of a deal, but not as smooth as I'd like.

That led me to number three. This is the cover of 1/2" Double Esterlon. I haven't used it yet, but I think this might do better that the first two. You know I'll keep you updated!

I am new to the site so go easy on me.

Always use loctite on shakles and links used to hold yourself up. Having used the stuff for years and years I can tell you the green stuff won't be too hard to get off without heat, I use it for my stuff. Even the red really can be taken off without heat but puts up a fight. I would use green, never hurts to have a little more fudge room.

that's 1/2" double esterlon. Typically it'd be impossible to splice the two ends that close.

I took the core out and braided the cover as if it were a single-braid/hollow braid.

I think I could get near 6" short with this little trick. I don't recommend doing this. This is not endorsed by any manufacturer. Doing this WILL kill you immediately.
