Burned Biner

Point taken. Some gear is available from both types of supplyers(sp?), however what I was getting at was the guy who goes and buys a rock climbing harness, a hank of yellow poly. rope and a couple of alluminum snaps 'cause they are cheep, and calles themself an arborist. I'm tired of trying to fix the problems these guys leave in thier wake!

Is it considered acceptable to lower anything on a biner, I saw a good climber do it recently, he dropped a fair sized top out of a albeisia on it, but something didn't feel right about it, it just seemed there should be a block up there not a steel biner??

I'm I wrong on this.

Thanks for the compliment Jon. I'm not sure anyone has called me a good climber before.

You are definitely right that a block would have been far preferable in that situation. As I didn't have another block easily available I decided to cut a corner and use a steel biner instead. That being said, the top was NOT that heavy (this is albizia we're talking about here, it doesn't weigh much) and I think I was well within the safe working load of all the gear being used. I would not have done that on a much larger top.

And of course, with such an accomplished ground man on the ropes I knew that the piece was going to run as smooth as silk!

I think calling it a large, not so large, small, tiny, medium, ect is a funny way to size a top. Weight/length/diameter seems much more fitting, IMO. I dont like a biner being used for butt hitching, but depending on the situation/size of the top, I may not care. Loblolly pine around here, leon could easily take a top under 100lbs, I havent a problem with a biner there.

In "normal" situations, I really don't see a place for carabiners in rigging. If you are doing controlled lowering in a non-dynamic fashion like speedline scenarios, alright. Otherwise, beef it up and reduce the amount of hard-links. That's my opinion of course.

1. Spidey Sense

The hightened ability to smell weed. An ability that stoners gain over time to detect other stoners in public.

So then he went and... *sniff* ... my spidey sense is tingling.

I agree Mark, even a micro pulley helps a good bit! Depending on the situation, a natural crotch might could have been used .

Sure, no biggy. You could leave a stub for the top, or cut reliefs. If I had to cut reliefs I would likely just use a block.

I am not even remotely familiar with this 'other' version of spidey sense that has been discussed. Something to do no doubt with my determination to embrace my life the good and the bad, without the need for mental escape.

Interesting take on the whole spidey sense comment, I thought it was in reference to spiderman. Any hoo, WOW, great topic and thanks for sharing Nick. I once suggested using biners at work to cut some corners and now I understand why those I suggested it to weren't so receptive. I wonder why he was so determined that he was doing the right thing yet wanted nothing to do with sharing his name! I've had similar problems with my aluminum figure eight. (petzl)

I wasn't sure what you meant by spidey sense either when you first posted, so I looked it up and found the definition posted above, thought it was funny but I guess that wasn't want you were referring to, oh well my bad.
