Bug eyes

Anyone have any experience with the Bug Eyes safety glasses?

It seems on windy days, I always seems to get a handful of sawdust in my eyes regardless of the type of safety glasses I wear. Its usually on a large removal where Im cutting big wood while aloft, the wind just always seem to take it right in my face.

I try to use the top or bottom of the bar to throw the majority of the dust away from me, but when its really windy it doesnt seem to matter much.

I know they have the screen ones which I dont think Id like (messes with my depth perception), Id be more inclined to use the clear or tinted lenses. Do they come tinted? And are they vented to prevent fogging? And mostly, are they comfortable?

I like mine.

I am not a big fan. They give me a headache everytime a have them on. They do work well though.

I agree...they mess up your view and vision a bit.....and let some fine sawdust through. But, in the rain, like today, they're the only thing that works. Wasn't raining when we left today, and mine are still at home. So I was bare faced....don't like it....but I rarely wear glasses when its wet..gotta be able to see. Gonna try a ball cap under my helmet, that will help...have never done that much....

I did some research. The lensed versions are not Z89 rated. Hmmmm. I guess I should look at the flip down visor on the helmet. Dang, I hate them things.

Ill check out the link Tom, thanks. I know the Stein helmet isnt available in the US yet, but Tom do think that the Stein with visor would keep 99% out of my eyes, in addition to glasses?

Jim and I looked at it last night. We both agreed that the Stein might eliminate the need for glasses...assuming...the face shield passes Z87 standards. With glasses it's hard to imagine very much getting in your eyes.

The Stein is setup to have a couple of different earmuff/faceshield combos too. The holes are drilled and tapped right from the factory.

You can order the hybrid safety glasses/goggles directly from Elvex's distributor, because they don't like to sell directly to the public.

Order from Lab Safety Supply 800-356-0783
The glasses are Elev Go-Specs, item # GG-40C-AF
They cost around $9.50 before s&h charges.

I bought mine because I was sick of sweat dripping on the safety glasses. I would have to stop my work to take off my glasses to clean the sweat from them. --Multiple time per day!

And I confirm what everyone else has experienced. I also get fine saw dust in my eyes (on occasion). They don't protect absolutely, but I have seen a great reduction with junk in my eyes compared to regular safety glasses.

I also noticed that safety glasses let in noise from ear muffs. The Bugz eyes allow for a better seal against noise.

Another pro for the Bugz eyes are this: Have you every been climbing in a tree and a twig snuck beneath the safety glasses and poked you in the eye? Well, this will not happen with the Bugz eyes.--Unless, you're really trying to get hurt.

Not impact resistant argument:

Can I get a number as to how much impact (force) it would take for something to penetrate through the wire mesh?

How much impact resistance is necessary? Do we have to stop a bullet? I'm dealing with saw dust here folks. How about you?

Note: I'm aware that a high powered chainsaw can throw something back at the operator's face. I have experienced this a handful of times with hundreds of tree removals under my belt... (It doesn't happen often) But, I don't operate my 088 every day felling large trees either.

I would think if one fell trees with a high powered saw daily, he/she would double up with protection. (With a redundant combination of a face shield and eye protection).

Were am I going with this?

Even though they may not hold up for "industry standards," I believe they are still safe to use. That is my opinion. Not to be help liable for my opinion (Sorry. Legal commercial there...)

Personally, I use them for the purposes stated above. They are not perfect at all.

Someone needs to make a better product.

I digress...

Jamin, I hear what you're saying and I totally agree. I love my Bugz and have no problem with them other than the minor issues that you have noted above.

I always like to try out new reasonably priced safety glasses and that is why I tried the new Elvex Hybrid safety glasses/goggles. I haven't gotten them to fog up yet but I have gotten some sweat condensation buildup in them.

I think with the new Elvex hybrid there is definitely a potential for water problems with rain and sweat. This is where the Bugz are really superior. I wear contact lenses with my Bugz and the occasional sawdust in my eyes is no worse than without my lenses.

Someone really does need to make a better product and I would love to be able to do it.

They make a mesh version that works very well. And they are small enough that you can wear sunglasses over the top of them on very sunny days. I only wear mine when i know there is going to be alot of saw dust on the agenda

Coolest looking protection ever! LOL These "Hanson bros" glasses justify the expense in the winter up here. 0 fogging up. better interface with hearing pro. After a few wears the feeling of staring through mesh disapears. Just like a hockey game with the mesh to protect the fans from wayward pucks. Cool factor "0" climb on!
