Bring in the bigger guns : )

Here's the final cut on the oak. Wanted to save this one for last.

Any guesses on the weight??

We notched out one side to lay it down. The cover on the sling fused together alittle bit after laying it down.

Last pic. A closer perspective. 10ft. was already cut off to load on the log truck. The log truck had to have another crane meet him at his wood lot to get the wood off his truck.

I'm still taking bets on the weight... dealer pays.

Most excellent pics!!

And good job on them big bad boys!

Too bad that big Red Oak had to go, that was quite a tree.
Was there any major decay in it?

Ill guess 30k

My estimated and calculated guess is:
10.38 tonnes or 20,760 pounds.

I'm basing that on an average diameter of 1 metre (39 inches)
and 12 metres (39 feet)in height.
Cross section area (Pi times the radius squared is):
3.14 times (0.5 times 0.5)
3.14 times 0.25 equals 0.785
height of 12 metres times 0.785 equals 9.42 cubic metres

Here comes a nice bit for the metric folks.....
Approximate maximum green weight for fairly heavy hardwod like Oak is 1 tonne per cubic metre
So now we've got 9.42 tonnes or 20,760 pounds.
Which is bound to be wrong of course !
My guess guess is that it could be 8 tonnes (approx. 17,600 pounds) or even less.
C'mon Sawdust, put us out of our misery !

What's up riggsy,
I don't know what the exact total was. It was spit some way between 2 homeowners. Last numbers I heard was in the low 20k range. The crane co. charged a bit for overtime. They were still getting ready to take off weights at 7:30pm. They had to be around 9k. Knowing this guy he still got good numbers, probably not as much as he wanted.

Hey mangoes, that's the owner of the tree co. trying to get his hands dirty. He's old enough to make his own decisions. Out of my hands.

The log weighed 28k. It would have been nice to see that in the air. No need though, didn't feel totally confident in the sling either. We knew it could hold it the way it did...but. I think the operator was just looking for something heavier to play with.

WoW! I would NEVER have a tree like that within range of my house.

[/ QUOTE ] homeowner neighbor put new driveway in and took all the roots out with the old driveway. we had some heavy winds and rain and it was like dominos. crunched his BMW and smashed his house and took out a wall.

Riggs showed me a huge Red Oak tree near Philly that he had to price. Lots of huge wood. The guy said that he would rather have it fall than pay that price. I think that it was 12K or something? Anyway, he got his wish! It fell this week and crushed his million dollar home. /forum/images/graemlins/eek.gif

And if the insurance company has a brain they wont pay. Thats neglegence on his part relieveing the liabilty from the insurance IMO.

A fool none the less, I assume noone was hurt?
