FYI interesting; at least to me:

I have a Black Gum tree close to the house; lived here for 34 years. It’s the only known Gum on my 12-acer wooded property.
This is the first year I have seen berries / seeds on the tree. I probably just wasn’t very observant.
The tree is 14” DBH; and ~50’ high.

The berries are purple, ¼” diam.; the seed fills most of the inside of the berry.
The leaves are vey glossy green; & turn very bright red in late fall.

Apparently it's difficult to propagate and transplant with standard nursery practice.

I've seen them struggle to take form too - kinda flatten out at the top/loose leader.

But great trees when it goes

My Black Gun was natural. The house is 37 years old in a wood area that was selectively logged ~70+ years ago.
The tree was well established when I move in 34 years ago.
