Big Trees in the West

Hey, does anyone have any suggestions about places to climb redwoods, doug firs, sitka spruce, or other tall trees on the west coast? I ask, because I've climed the tallest trees here in NY, but am moving to Cali and was hoping to project some tall ones, but don't want to bother any regulations or park officials.

Yeah, I hear ya...sounds like this guy :

"saw an impreza the other day - fancied a spin but didn't want to trouble the owner or Police etc. took it for a joy ride and left it where I found it"

He didn't worry about the tyres he wore out or turbo he blew up or replacing the oil either, and that will affect the impreza's safe useful life expectancy.

There are important reasons why restrictions to free access are put in place.

Where're you moving in Cali? There're pretty good sized trees all over!

You should read "The Wild Trees" by Richard Preston. It gives LOTS of advice on how to find good sized redwoods.

I can take you to some redwoods and sequioas.

Skip across the border to Canada and just in Vancouver are some pretty impressive trees."Light house park" in West Van has some biggies.Queen Charlotte islands further up also has some huge Sitka Spruce and its just a loverly place to be aye!

^ and pray that you dont get caught by the West Vancouver District Parks rangers. Not only will you be arrested, your gear confiscated (and not returned), you'll be ticketed a hefty amount.

I'd stick with the Queen Charlottes

West Van Park police?

Never saw or heard of them?Actually there are more than a few rec climbers who climb in public veiw in stanley park and out in west Van.

Re: West Van Park police?

^ the GVRD Rangers, they have the final say on park activities. They are less than happy when when encountering treeclimbers. I received a very stern warning, was told the ticket amount and was also told gear can be siezed.

best way to enjoy the trees there is to NOT draw attention to yourself. Pack your gear in a backpack, look like everyone else, dont bushwack with people watching you, and bring your ropes up out of view.

avoid the park on weekends, best time is mondays/tuesdays, hardly anyone in there.
