I love how folks around providence heading to ‘South County’ (lower part of the state) feel like they have to pack a lunch and a pair of underwear. It’s a half hour drive, people. Also that’s not even the actual name of the county. And anything past the state border they bring a passport. Head to Worcester (1 hour drive)? Better stay overnight.Yep, New England states be small. I now live in the smallest state in the union which used to have the longest name…State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. We voted out the Providence Plantations part back in 2020.
You just have to remember that up here, we all used to be one big joint called the Massachusetts Bay Colony and covered much of what is presently Mass, Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut.
The events that carved out this part of the world are pretty interesting to say the least.
I stand by my bid.Shoulda been 3600 on this one, next time I'm getting out of the truck.![]()
So true! Never mind the Aquidneck Islander natives that claim to have never left the island for anything, ever. As if that’s a point of pride. I wonder if they ponder the fact that close to 100% of what they need to get through a day comes from off island. Well, I suppose some people could live on potatoes and Beech leaves. Maybe.I love how folks around providence heading to ‘South County’ (lower part of the state) feel like they have to pack a lunch and a pair of underwear. It’s a half hour drive, people. Lordy that is so true, imo.I find accurate bidding to be difficult. Accurate and efficient tree work is easier.
I hear ya. I often proclaim I gotta quit doing acid before appts. And no more drunk appts either.next time I'm getting out of the truck.![]()
Similar. My work volume is quite high, so lately I’ve been giving a ballpark verbal quote on the conservative side along with a realistic timeframe. This process has saved a good deal of writing up estimates that may immediately be declined.I hear ya. I often proclaim I gotta quit doing acid before appts. And no more drunk appts either.
But seriously, one thing that can prevent underpricing is to physically touch the tree while gazing up it.
I used to give all estimates while on the initial site visit, now I give them all by email from home which lets me ponder the job a bit, can prevent being too rash with the pricing.
It was a 30/30 bid. 30 mph from 30 feet away.Did you really not get out of the truck?
What did you bid, compared to your afterthought?

7 hours for 2 guys one day and a bit of time dropping off the wood the day after.I stand by my bid.
I thought everyone here was flexin a bit. That’s about a solid day for a crew. How long did it take?
Next time I'm just sending the pictures to youIs this Price is Right rules?
Everything is so flat in that picture. I wouldn’t know how to work this tree.
Honestly I’d go for $3k try to actually make some money on it. Lot of time in hauling useless wood and raking. Elm is messy.
Lol I’m here for it.Next time I'm just sending the pictures to you![]()
You’re shooting for $500/hr two people?7 hours for 2 guys one day and a bit of time dropping off the wood the day after.

Around here, that’s pretty normal for a two-man crew, unless there’s some specialty equipment onsite $100 per hour is pretty much the going rate.Well, I may have understated the 'bit of time' on the second day. It was probably close to 4 hours all tolled. So let's say 22 hrs total we made a little more than 100 per hour.
Do you have a local grapple truck service that you can hire out the hauling? I've been subbing out my truck for a flat rate of $400/load for a 50yd truck. All you'd have to do is cut the debris down and have it by the road.Well, I may have understated the 'bit of time' on the second day. It was probably close to 4 hours all tolled. So let's say 22 hrs total we only made a little more than 100 per hour. I'm going to shoot for 150-200 in the coming busy season. 100 is fine for me, especially in winter I'm never going to complain about that rate but I didn't get that high from doing this removal manually. It wasn't a very satisfying feeling if you know what I mean. Won't be doing that again for awhile hopefully!
I wish. If I could hire someone with a truck like yours locally for 400 I'd probably do that every day I worked.Do you have a local grapple truck service that you can hire out the hauling? With this tree in particular, a decent rigging point or falling the trunks would have done half of that work for you. At that rate, if it saves you two hours you break even and you don't have to deal with disposing of the debris.
here is one I hauled off for another company this morning. 1hr on-site including raking and leaf blowing. Uprooted Ash tree landed on the garage. He removed it and left it in a pile for me. Another benefit is that he can move onto the next job while that brush and logs are being loaded, instead of making multiple trips himself to the dump.

Come visit , my doors open. I'm south jersey outside the pine Barrens by the beach though so maybe not what most expect when they think jersey... maybe though hahaI love these comments, so reminiscent of my limited experience in new England. My inlaws live in this happy little valley outside Hartford and they rarely leave. They don't seem to think much of the surrounding areas or people therin. I suggested we take a day trip to NYC when i was there once, which is only an hour or two away, that idea went over like a lead balloon. I love it out there, hopefully I'll get to explore a bit more this fall.![]()
