Just looking for some current recommendations on what people are using for Tree ID field guides these days...

I know Tchukki Anderson gave a really positive review for "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Trees" by More and White.

Does anybody have this? I can't tell if it is more of a textbook than a field guide...

Thanks for any recommendations.

You may find better detail and faster ID, by looking for a state or regional identification guide. There are also phone and tablet apps, like leafsnap. UF has recently published a book and released a companion app of 140 tree species commonly found in North and Central Florida. The app is $3.99 and goes anywhere your phone goes. You may find similar books and apps produced by your land grant university.

Leafsnap app! Seems to work pretty good. Just have a sheet of paper or something with you to use as a background when taking the picture.

I like using the Dirrs Tree and Shrub App. Its expensive as far as apps are concerned but I think its better then the book. It has full color pictures, line drawings and has an awesome search function.
