Best Mechanical Devices

DDRT - I have two: swivel on saddle bridge to keep the rope legs from twisting up when I rotate around; followed closely by a ladder which beats the crap out of mechanical ascender or hip thrusting that first 20 feet - I hate using ascenders on long DDRT ascents because my arms are short and my hands are always in my hitch and pinched between the rope legs as I ascend
SRT/DDRT - 8mm beeline in a michoacan if that counts
SRT - rope wrench

I'm on team bulldog bone. I really can't imagine something that would work better for me. It works great srt, which is 90% + of my climbing, and ddrt just fine too. Hh2 is also a great tool. Once again, seamless transition between srt and ddrt, compact, many hitch choices to use and tailor to your desired handling characteristics. Bdb for the win due to seconds on or off the rope, super easy to adjust and dial in, built to last, great customer service from surveyor, replacement parts readily available (though I haven't needed any yet do to great build quality and wear )

I know there are a lot of rope runner lovers out there. I haven't tried one. That reminds me of another thing I love about the bdb, no parts that detach from it to drop.

I can see how it could happen, definitely. But if I ever did have to change over while aloft, I'm going to be acutely aware of the possibility of dropping the thing, so maybe it's unlikely.

I have dropped parts several times while installing and uninstalling it on the ground, at least the first 5-10 times I used it. You quickly work out an order of operations to help mitigate this. The pulley, carabiner, and/or friction plate are the most often dropped pieces.

I really wish the Rope Runner would have made every slic pin captive like the one holding the friction plate in place!

Rope runner, rope wrench and HH2 in that order for srt. HH2 for drt hands down. I briefly tried a prototype Akimbo and it seemed ok but i question the tending point on the production model as i have to stop often to catch breath. Cursed beta blockers.
