BC1000xl or 1230A?

Need some input on these two chippers, what ever you can spare from experience. Does it take more power to run a drum vs. disk? problems associated with either machines ext? I'm tired of stuffing branches through a 6" opening on my current machine.

I was told by the dealer that the BC1000 was basically a 9 inch chipper with a larger opening for the occasional 12" log. They said it wont hold up if you try to chip big stuff all day. This may just be a sales ploy from the Rayco/Morbark dealer I talked to. I have an older 1230. Great machine, disc chipper and I hear drum is much better. I also hear the gravity feed wheel is a much better way to go then the side by side I have.

For brush only the 1000 will do what you need it to do ,but if you want to chip logs get a bigger unit. We have had 4 1000's for a year and a half and no real problems yet. These chip 3 to 5 loads per day.

my employer said to "demo" different brands and sizes before you buy one. he tried 9 different chippers before he bought a woodsman 18X (?). he said the only problem he had with the woodsman before he bought it was that he used it so much the week he had it that he had to refuel it (30 gallons of diesel X $2.50 a gallon). this is also the chipper we currently use daily

True,if I wanted to run 12'ers through it all day I would look to a larger unit, however 6-10" shouldn't be a problem right?

Arborcare, what do you think would wear out if I did run larger logs through.

Hammer do you ever have trouble with jammed logs behind the intake feed wheel on the drums, if so how do you get it out, or how is it avoided.
Thanks guys

P.S. a local dealer gave me a price of 27 large for a new 05 bc 1000xl and 24,500 for a demo with 95 hours, does this seem a little high?

No real problems to date as far as Jamming goes.

27 stacks is a little much. 5 stacks too much IMO.

In another year and a half we will be getting rid of the chippers that we have with a sealed bid, if anyone is interested.

They tell me the clutch assembly gets beat up and the bearings go. They also told me that the thing will just vibrate apart evantually. I soft of doubt it but I suppose if you use it for 20 years anything is possible. I bought a 10 year old 1230. It isn't pretty but for my first chipper it's a worker!!!!!

Hammer, I decided on the bc 1000xl, found a used one with 778hrs, 2002 model with some cosmetic damage for 13 "stacks" /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am going to bring my mechanic to look at it on 7/28, I'll get back to you, hope it works out
