Once I forgot my boots and had to do a spur removal in skateboard shoes. Let me tell you, that sure sucked!

(I now keep a backup pair of boots in the truck so that won't ever happen again)

I took the advice of @rico (maybe not always wise) and bought a pair of La Sportiva Mountain boot for spur work. Damn if they are not the most comfortable boots I have ever tried on spurs. Spent about three hours on them yesterday and my feet felt just fine when I was done. They are not so much for walking around in though. Kind of feel like Herman Munster.

I did all pruning and ground work in my busenitz or sambas in warm weather for awhile. They're great for tree pruning and shrub work. My dog ate my sambas and I haven't gotten around to replacing them but they are great shoes for climbing in. Actually maybe the best climbing footwear I've tried (for pruning)

I rolled pretty hard when I was young and would show up for work without boot more times than I care to admit. On those days it was usually up to my civilian foot wear, which was generally Chuck T’s, Vans, or ducked tapped together cowboy boots to get me through the day. Nothing like spending 6-8 hours in spurs in that kind of footwear. Idiocracy at its finest.

I forgot my asolo mountaineering boots once, climbed in my regular very light hikers for about 30 minutes on gaffs went home and got my other boots. I don't mind doing an oak prune in my light hikers I wear them for most of my ground work, but I wore them to dead wood a big fir up in Tahoe once and decided it wasn't a great choice.
