Council considers options in tree felling case involving PM's brother

Wingecarribee council says it is still considering its options on what action to take against the Prime Minister's brother, Stan Howard, and a contractor , over the felling of 70 trees in the southern highlands on the NSW south coast.

The trees were cut down without permission by a contractor on Mr Howard's property at Bowral late last year.

The council says a prosecution or an out of court order are two options under consideration.

The group Humane Society International has called for the State Government to investigate the illegal clearing of what they believed were two endangered species of trees.

Council general manager Mike Hyde says even though the trees were not endangered, permission is still needed to cut trees down.

"Much easier to ask for permission than ask for forgiveness in this sort of area and I do share the concern ... the environmental protection group have some valid concerns and council is there to help and address those concerns," he said.

Well ekka it sounds like the classic I did not know that, deal. In some parts that we have done tree claering for new houses to go in we still have to get the DEC over there to let them know whats going on and to see if they have any trees that are not to come out.
As you say get permission before hand, it takes a couple of min to fell a tree but it takes weeks to go to court and pay fines.
