So...I was considering adding a piston/into wedge splitter to my Dingo or buying a dedicated guillotine splitter since my Timberwolf is a pita with the biggies. Doing a little lurking on another forum I ran across this. Anybody have any use on this or witness one? There was a thread on here at the beginning of the year but nobody got into it in detail. I got the mini, I got the heavy auger...unit is only under $6 hun. If I can drive up to a long 24" dia log and split it or split pine to chip or split a 40" dia by firewood size oak fatty...then I am in.

Never seen one, but even with the video’s assumed positive spin ………….………
It seems like:
1. It’s pretty slow.
2. Therefore uses a lot of fuel.
3. Incomplete splitting.
4. Therefore lots of manual work to complete the split
5. Maybe OK for fence posts ?

You ever split wood Gregster? If one does not have to throw away say 35" dia prime woods cause the process is too slow on a Timberwolf...it is worth it. I could care less about fuel when I get $320. cord delivered and dumped. I doubt the splitting on long logs of ash (straight grained) would result in "incomplete splitting". Anybody that isn't giving a less than acceptable opinion 558687_436122516482192_1130832002_n.webp got one? :-)

Yep, for well over 35 yrs.
I split & burn 4+ cords to heat the house.
Sorry if you found my response unacceptable & useless.
Just my observations on the video.

I bust up large rounds and chip them. Large as in 24"+ and 6-12' long. Its splits them awesome. I also use it for the same diameter hardwood logs and stack them for reserve firewood or just making them easier to manage. I found it slightly used on ebay, and so glad i have it around. So worth it for me.

I should say its not my sole splitting source. I split with a super splitter and conveyor. This just makes large wood useful.

Connected to a mini? I was always worried a mini wouldn't have enough power to do much good with a atom splitter, that it was better suited for full size skids or tractors.

Many years ago I had an auger/screw woodsplitter. It was powered by a VW pancake motor from a Karman Ghia and driven through a 4 spd tranny from a Saab. It worked well enough. I had to be careful because it would sometimes follow an odd split and the piece would turn into a propeller! Cheap splitter and it worked well enough.

Using it on a mini seems like a great setup.

A body of mine has a screw type splitter for his full size skid steer....he uses it just to wittle down big monsters to split...but it does mangle the wood a little bit. Beats picking up/moving 500+pound pieces though. He just broke his first tip last week actually. Has had it almost 4 years.

It doesn't need any down to penetrate wood, just the screw to enter to initiate. If a mini can turn this auger (video) even thru some small roots then it should work on this. My goal is not as a go to splitter but rather just to break down the biggies so they can be hand loaded. The splitting of long logs would just be icing.... I have a 600# log lift on my splitter but that all takes time and when the biggies split, they just fall off the damn machine and often have to be log lifted back up...which is just on one side of the machine.

tips are just about $60. Also I think an attraction IS also "picking up/moving biggies" too so you can take them to where you want the splits and then proceed.

Hey Brendon, thought just came to me...how does it split going down the cut end and not in the side of the piece. I suppose if you got stuck it would be more difficult to "reverse" its extraction with it then being round and not having the side profile which it can brace against to twist it out/?

Ive never tried to be honest. Smallest length I've split is 4 feet.

I don't have much pre cut rounds around here. Just log length.

Cant imagine it would be much different.
