When I worked for Asplundh, there were strict rules about doing or bidding side work. You couldn't even give out your phone number. To do a side job on the clock meant you were gambling a Union position with full benefits, $25/hr, and the chance of being fired with a no-rehire mark against your name. Also, we were under a constant push to account for every minute, every dollar, every line mile trimmed.
Side jobs still went on, but it was the rarity, and the GF's would not be sympathetic.
An interesting tangent... in the Portland, OR area the Utility makes an effort to protect homeowners and non-clearance tree companies. They offer, at no cost, a "homeowners assist". If you want to trim or remove a tree within proximity of the wires, they will send an Asplundh crew to trim the tree until it is safe. Often, in the case of removals, we would trim until the stub or spar was 1' below the neutral wire. No chipping or debris removal was offered, but the electrical hazard was mitigated. For a while, there was a private company specializing in "hazardous high voltage removals". They'd bid the job at top dollar, then call the power company and ask for the assist, and then come out and be very well compensated for a chipping job and chunking down 25' of trunk wood. I believe they were finally thwarted when Asplundh authorized the crew to do full removals and stipulated clean-up... nothing left to collect a check for.
