POSITION: 17-0340 Arborist Technician II Hiring Range: $21.91 - $24.35/hr
Division: Natural Resources - Forestry Regular Full –Time with benefits
Department: Public Works & Natural Resources Mon – Fri 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the City Forester, assist and support the City’s Urban Forestry Program which includes the health, safety and aesthetics of public trees within the City. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks related to care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, including the operation and maintenance of various specialized equipment. Supports Forestry Services with public outreach and education.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: Perform technical urban forestry functions for tree care operations. Prune, remove and maintain City owned trees and other vegetation. Respond to tree maintenance needs and storm damage concerns. Implements a Plant Health Care program with emphasis on Emerald Ash Borer. Provides treatment of trees for insect & disease issues. Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools. Operate aerial lift, grappler, stump grinder, chipper, and PHC sprayer. Performs tree maintenance operations in compliance with industry standards and specifications. Hazard tree assessment and mitigation. Identify tree species and evaluation of tree health. Contract management and records management. Maintain GIS tree inventory program. Planning and planting of trees to increase urban tree canopy. Assist with educational programs such as EAB awareness, Arbor Day and Tree City USA. Provide information to the public relative to tree care and arboricultural practices. Trains, oversees and direct the work of temporary and seasonal employees.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed outside most of the time, under varying and extreme weather conditions. Ability to work in environmental conditions which may include excessive noise; dust, pollen, gases, oils solvents and chemicals including a variety of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Work requires considerable physical effort including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pulling, pushing, walking, and standing for extended periods of time. Work also involves the ability to perform duties at a variety of heights. Work may be performed on weekends; overtime and adjusted schedules may also be required
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor or Associates degree with major course work in urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture or natural resource. A minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in Urban Forestry or related field. Special Qualifications: Possession of or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment:
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certification
- Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (Class "B" CDL) with airbrake endorsement
- First Aid & CPR certificates
Possession of or ability to obtain within first 12 months of employment:
- Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License (Qualified Supervisor) in Turf Pest Category and Ornamental Pest Category
