Arbor Day

Was that today? Same to you.

Mark/Tom can we do something to limit the uploaded file size of avatars? They're displayed at 80x80, is there any reason for allowing uploaded images of "physical" dimensions greater than that? I mean, really, 1.6 MB for 80x80?

Here treena, the attached image will display exactly the same as the one you're using for your avatar. Fetch it to you computer, then upload it as your new avatar, please.

Glens,

You seem to be the only one having a problem with this. Why?

I have a dial-up connection and do not have a problem with download time at all.

Maybe a tweak on your end will fix the problem? /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

You don't have a problem with an 80x80 avatar tying up the connection for a full 6 minutes (the time it takes to fetch 1.6 MB of compressed data on a good 56k day)? Dang, I though I was laid-back!

I have a connection (at home) which is as tweaked as it can be in terms of performance. It's tweaked in part by the use of a web-cache called "squid" (maybe your ISP is using it, too, or even their upstream provider) on "my" end of the modem. After the first 6 minutes of waiting for that avatar, subsequent requests for it come into my browser at 10 MB/s. I'm also using a couple of proxies on my side of the connection so that incoming content is re-written to not contain requests for ads or unwanted cookies/content (and to fix broken HTML which is too often served).

But thanks for the suggestion.

This bulletin board software is perhaps the best available, but the configuration is not the best it can be.

Glen,

The problem with limiting the size would be the confusion for the newbie of "why won't this load" or "how do I resize this thing"? Wouldn't that seem like the way it would go?

[/ QUOTE ]

Im not sure if it can be done here in this board. I know some forums/boards that use a upload tool that automatic resize the picture if exceding the limits.

For a newbee just make a FAQ for Q en A about uploading pictures.

If I had administrative access to the box the forum is running on, I'd set up a cron job to go through and automatically check and resize if necessary the avatar pics. That's an offer; wanna give me the opportunity?

What's not to work? Save the attachment to your hard drive as an actual file (not a link). Then upload the file as your new avatar.

Glen

(I'll remove it from my profile in a relatively short while)

Wolter,

The only "problems" I see with the process is that your password needs to be entered twice and the ckeck-box needs to be set for the desired avatar source, as well as providing that source correctly.

Don't forget to force a total refresh of a site page containing your avatar after you're done if you're using a browser or web cache. If you are and don't, the old image will likely be rendered in place even the though server would send the new if your browser actually requested it instead of using the cached copy it "thinks" is still good.
