Anything wrong with owning more than one rope??

Just wondered who out there owns more than one rope (I'm sure everybody does) but wanted to check and see. I'd like to buy a longer one this year, somewhere around 150' to 200'. Right now I have a 120', which is good for most everything, but the bigger trees we're getting ready to climb and other around here, require something along 150' to 200'. Just wanted your guys opnion. Probaly going with the PI. Thanks guys!!

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

You can never have too many ropes. I keep 90' and 150' lifelines with me plus 200' of 1/2" superbraid for a handline and natural crotch rigging and 200' of 9/16" stable braid for block rigging.

PI is a great choice if you like smaller rope... consider Tachyon, it's nice stuff, a lot like PI but rounder under load.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Thanks. I read this in books alot and just thought I would post to make sure. I really like the skinny ropes alot. Right now I climb on a Fly, but I've heard so much good stuff about PI I figured I'd buy one, just in a longer length. Also like the camo on the PI for some reason. Dad has some thats 120', tried it a few times and really liked it. Can't wait to pick some up!!

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I own three ropes, one is about 70 foot and I use that for my Grands fun climb and my footlock rope, the other is velocity about 120 and then my prize PI 150

all climbing ropes. nice to have a backup when one is STUCK, high in a tree and you have to do a gear rescure.

BUT then i am a rec climber

have fun in the trees you climb

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

i own a poison ivy line and a velocity line, both are nice, the velocity is by far my favorite, its very small, feels great in your hands right out of the bag, and has a lot less stretch than the poison ivy, now if only it had an eye splice...

owning a couple of ropes is never a bad thing, if we have a couple of trees that need to be climbed in a day, we will set all of the lines, then throw the ropes up right away, i literally come down from one tree, unclip and walk over to another and start making my way up, the ground crew pulls my other line from the tree i just climbed and place it in my next climb, it really frees us up and keeps me working at a nice and fast death pace

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I have a 70', 180' and 220'. I use the 180' the most tho. Today I had the 220' out and it was about 40' feet too short. Maybe I need another one...

haha very nice. I'm just starting to build my private gear so i only have one rope right now but i intend to get more than 2 :).

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I've got 2 climb lines, one 120' and one small one for pines. Rigging lines I have 3 natural crotch, 2 false crotch lines, and over 1000' on spools.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

You should never have more than one rope - send me your spares until you need them.

You know I'm kidding right?

I'm embarassed to say I have ropes hanging all over the house.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

This kid is 15 years old. I would honestly be cautious about making any recommendations in regards to climbing trees.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

tucker, what does his age have to do with him climbing trees, if anything, he is at the right age, and we are all way too old

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

What a person does at age 15 isnt my point. My point was about making recommendations to a teenager about climbing. There's a lot of liability out there these days with the things we say. Just pitching my opinion out there about being cautious. It'd suck to have someone's father on the phone saying, "You gave my kid the idea to to A, B, C, and he broke his arm!"
Not saying anyone gave any ideas or suggestions, simply throwing up the caution flag for those interested. And for those not interested, carry on and dont mind me.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

i see what your sayin, but his pops is a treeman as well, so he can bounce these ideas off the old man and the old man can tell him to stop talking to us strangers, then he will get into a fight with his old man and say he just doesnt understand, at that point he will practice a technique he learned from me here on the buzz, break his arm, and then i will relocate across seas, its all about a contingincy plan brother

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Thanks guys. Can't wait till summer to start buying some gear. And yes, Dad's a treeman. Been one for 15 years. Learned just about everything I know from him. And if it wouldn't have been for this form, we would never have gotten involved in Crane jobs, etc. He's not totally set on my buying another rope and agrees a longer one would ne nice, but he considers it better than buying another game console. He just dreads those things for some reason.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Too many to count. KMIII, velocity, fly etc. They all have their purpose. You can never have too many ropes, just make sure you retire them when needed.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Familtytree, you have some valid points also. I guess I am just weary of certain things anymore. maybe i look to far into stuff. then again, that can be better than going through life not giving any thought to things.
Rangerdanger, my opinion, a variety of ropes is an asset. You nip a rope with a saw or gaff hard into one halfway through a job, you'll want to have another one handy. I keep a variety of lengths. I love short ropes. Not too short that is, but if I'm working in a small tree, i dont use a 150 foot line.
Remember, dont use your climbing lines and lowering lines interchangably. Use each kind for its sole purpose.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I have far too many ropes i believe. But they all do have a purpose. I have a 150' fly line for all my crane work and hand climb take downs, a 120' velocity for smaller climbs, and a good access line. I also have a 150' blaze line that is only used in pine trees. I will alos be adding a tachyon to the list for whatever i need it for.

I would also like to say that i don't believe Rangerdangers age has anything to do with giving the kid advice. If you look back and read his posts, he sounds more intelligent than most of the summer help we get that are 4 years older than him.

I think RangerDanger seems like a mature 15. I think he is "eating up" the info here and is also teaching his dad some stuff.

Correct me if I am wrong RangerD.

And for the sake of the topic: As stated above, you can never have enough ropes.
