Anyone know about this tree?

I found a tree while walking in Historic Ft. Myers, FL. It is next to the giant Banyan Tree. It is all fenced and caution taped off, looks to be an Oak of some sort, has multiple cables, and turnbuckles, and straps, and ropes. Looks as though a sailing team was in the tree.

The locals say they tried to save it, too expensive though.

Just seeing if any buzzers know what happened?

I'm heading down that way next week. Location? Picture?

Highballing conservation work by throwing in kitchen sinks is malpractice. It's usually cya-based. This disease is common in FL, due to whacky preachings by Voldemort.

ill look it up later on. sad looking bit of cabling. From what my inlaws are telling me the tree is on the news a lot. city residents say that they dont want to spend huge money saving a 'tree' while there are people losing their city jobs.

if im back down that way tomorrow ill snap a few pics

so this is near the edison-ford house, but owned/managed by the city? would like to stop by; it's been a while since i saw the that place, very nice.

googling threw up a bunch of realestate ads..link ot newspaper story?

Although the pics aren't clear enough to show the detail of the previous work carried out it does look like a very attractive oak.

I'm surprised options like those carried out on the veteran trees at Washington State were not considered but then again perhaps they were.

The media are notoriously bad at getting anything like the facts across.

story is clear as mud. what is this team from NC? I've lived here 25 years and have no idea who's off on that crusade.

March 6 it got a reprieve for a week but it is still there?

tree looks healthy as all get out; why would they cut it down?

i've worked on live oaks at courthouses in florida that are in much worse shape, and folks are applying for grants to keep them alive.

Never heard of NC having a team of traveling tree doctors. Sounds lucrative.

Might be headed by Blinky, in search of funds for his latest merino wool three button slim cut suit (it impresses his clients).

Do you have the name of his tailor?...I'm impressed by the description alone, heavens knows our sheep industry needs as much support as it can get...what with the mulesing and the live exporting and the fratenising, and the well....they have had their problems is all I'm saying.

I suspect the "team" is media hyperbole, but I agree that there are clearly qualified Arbs in that region more than capable of providing good sound advice and options to the local authority.

The tree is great, nice and healthy. Has some codom problems and could use some weight reductions. But I dont see it as being un healthy. although I could only get within 20-25' of it due to the fence thats up.

If anyone is in this area give us some inside info.

I left the Commissioner advocate fellow an email and phone call. Told him of other live oaks around FL courthouses and city halls that have received a modicum of care and are doing just fine.

Extraordinary that hack consultants say the word "liability" and politicians panic.

More extraordinary that gouging contractors get $40k for a substandard support job, and $22k to clean up a broken limb.
But that is based on newspapers so no guarantee on facts.

I tried to get sub work from this same contractor last year and he offered $12/hour; said that's what he paid his top climbers. smell bad or what?

I will try to get copies of reports tomorrow. When you leavin BB?

Nice.

I was fortunate enough to climb that banyan a few years ago... awesome tree.

I had a picture Scotty took but can't find at the moment.

Sorry for continuing the derail...

Limb broke where a 3" (!) through bolt was installed to hold a cable, on a calm sunday afternoon. 2nd opinion to remove was reluctantly made due to same terrible hardware in the other 2 limbs, and high target. It'll be getting a 3rd opinion soon. ;)

Guy,

3" through bolt. Do you mean 3" diameter????

[/ QUOTE ]Yes I had to ask that twice, too. the guy looked from a lift so he got close enough to see and touch.

Sickest part is, the tree has good forks; no signs that it ever needed hardware. but someone got all worried about it because it was big, so someone was hired who did not know the standards and weakened it with insane hardware. Like 3" bolts installed way low on the tree, biomechanically screwing the whole thing up so bad that a huge limb broke off and a veteran arborist saw no way to stabilize it with new support and pruning.

I'll see it in a week or two; check ya then. Anyone near Ft. Myers please pm me.

The 3" throughbolts I couldnt see from the far reaches of the security fence they catiously put around the tree, LOL. The cable must be 1" aircraft cable, with turnbuckles and all really low in he tree.

Hope you can do some good here Guy, shes a real beauty.

Ill try and snap some high quality pics today or tomorrow if my travels allow the time.
