another rope question....

I know this question has been probably beaten into the ground, but I'm about to buy a 120' Samson Arbormaster (blue streak) rope. I have never used a smaller diamter rope and so am a bit wary of investing money into a line that feels to small for what I'm used to. I'm using a schwabisch right now (sometimes VT). Thought I'd get some suggestions before I made the plunge. Thanks!

That isn't small compared to the new ropes, it's 1/2".
I have it and like it.

Same here...it is my main climbing rope. I got it from Sherrill with an eye splice...I didn't realize that I should ask for a tight splice, carabiner size...it came with a large eye.

If you get some, get a tight splice.

I use it with a knut and BeeLine and HRC...it has been a good rope.

apologize for the confusion here. What I meant was that I was considering going with a smaller line than the blue streak; I tried the fly briefly but it felt odd using, not much to grab. So was weary of going smaller than traditional 1/2". Right now I'm using what I think they call the yellowjacket? it's green and yellow 1/2" and I like it a lot, but I've got only a 80' of that and need a longer rope.

Arbormaster is my favorite climbing line. I own smaller diameter ropes(Poison Ivy and Velocity) but for traditional DdRT half inch rope is still best IMO and Arbormaster is tops. I like NE Safety Blue and Yellowjacket also but AMaster is my favorite.

Ohhhhh, whole 'nother story. You've already keyed in on the biggest drawback people notice...there's less to hold on to. Most people counter this by either using sticky gloves (my choice) or waiting for your hands to get stronger (can you say future arthritis candidate?)

Fly really blazed the way in the 11mm arbo line and Blaze and Velocity have proven quite popular. I like that the last 2 are easier to splice.

As an alternative, you may consider Poison Ivy...Blaze's big brother. Just a little fatter, but not a full half inch.

Personally, I love the 11mm lines.

Arbormaster Bluestreak or New England Hi-Vee are my top choices for climbing line. I've been climbing on Blaze and Velocity for the last two seasons and have recently returned to the 1/2 inch lines.
