another form of rigging

They don't come cheap, $3600.

Too much.

Speaking of carts, I witnessed a cat pushing an invisible shopping cart across a parkin lot last week -

...nestle in amongst the other useless pieces of his arboricultural garbage which are gathering dust, such as the Unicender, the FOS lowering device and the Petzl Shunt.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hahahaha! Grover's got his curmudgeon cooking!

I use a Uni all of the time, can see the advantages and shortcomings of the FOS and found a use for the Shunt if I ever use a RADS for climbing!

My garage does have some other bits and bobs collecting sawdust though...but not these :)

there are a few of these carts collecting dust at work. I've been stashing stubs and small cutoffs on a pallet for drying. When I go camping I won't have to buy wood and it would be dry. Last week I decided to convert the grocery carts into wood drying bins. This will give good air circulation and get the wood off the ground. This should make the pile a little less snake and spider friendly.

It's really late over there... Maybe Grover's attempt at humor... Or he's trying to market Reg's cart LOL!

Tom, I would love to market Reg's cart. In fact, as soon as Stein USA has them available hear in the States, I plan on purchasing one.

For my particular work, with the surrounding topo here in NH, the Stein cart makes more sense than a log arch.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with this as well.

Easy enough to just make one.

[/ QUOTE ]

Reg, spent his own time and money building and patenting his cart and I wouldn't want to just copy his design, even if it was for my own use.

If we were all to just do that, where would the incentive be for designers to come up with new ideas?

Shirley you can't be serious. People that build things for their own use are the kind of citizens this country needs more of! It's moral and it's legal. Stealing ideas and selling them to others is another story.

Yes, I know that it's legal. I personally just wouldn't want to do it myself to someone that I know and respect.

Just like when I purchased my GRCS, I thought, yeah I could build one myself, but Greg has already gone through the trouble of doing the design and build.

Both my brother and my father are welders, so it would be easy enough to do, but I would like to show support to others, if I can afford to do so.

I have nothing but respect for people who build things for their own use and you're right stealing ideas and selling them to others is another story.

Shirley is surely serious...
Roger Murdock: Flight 2-0-9'er, you are cleared for take-off.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Victor Basta: Request vector, over.
Captain Oveur: What?
Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324.
Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.
Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?
Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!
Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over.
Tower voice: Over.
Captain Oveur: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: Roger, over!
Roger Murdock: What?
Captain Oveur: Huh?
Victor Basta: Who?

2k may not be halfway to a mini, but I'd rather save a little longer and have a mini. One could always put an axle under a log and use the mini for drag rather than rely on manpower...or use counterweights and so on. I have lots of hills to work with here and I like combustion engines. Would I buy a log arch/hand cart? Sure, but I'd rather spend money on a tool which can do far more than allow me to haul more brush or bigger logs with my own strength.

[/ QUOTE ]

There is a huge investment difference between a log arch and a mini. A mini has lots of moving parts, it has continual needs which will cost you the entire life of the machine. Dont ghet me wrong, I would love a mini, but its not going to happen in this low work climate I got. THere is the initial cost of the mini, but I would also need the means to get it to the job sites and I would have look for mini-needing jobs so the mini could pay its own way.

A log Arch has no needs, no other moving parts, does not consume gas and has nothing that can break. Unless it gets stolen it can serve you the remainder of your life. If you get a mini at some point, the mini and the arch can compliment eachother

In my situation, a mini would be a commitment. I would have to make that mini earn me money. I would have to really incorporate it into my life, The log arch makes me money when I need it too, it doesnt ask anything of me. If I left a mini in the garage for months on end I would be losing money and the machine would detiorate with neglect.
THe log arch only makes me money. I dont have to worry about it or think about it when I dont need it. Its just a really good friend that serves me.

I have made some bad purchases but the log arch and the GRCS have done nothing but good for me. stress free investments that just give back.

Many jobs I go with a little ranger. I tow the chipper and put the log arch in the back. I chip on site and haul the logs to the curb. I hire a log truck to come by and pick up all the logs. I have very low overhead and knock out big removals with minimal equipment. The GRCS is my crane, the log arch is my loader. I stick those two tools in the back of my garage until the next job. my Jet Sleds are my other favorite tool.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've always like your minimalist approach TB; seems it allows for more energy devoted to quality tree care.

RIP Leslie Neilson!

Thats my mom's name as well, strangely enough.

Hey, I'm not knocking the arch, Kevin. I just wouldn't pay 2k for one...like I said I'd rather throw that kind of money towards something with a motor. I remember seeing that vid. of you hauling a 3" chipper on a bike trailer to your jobsite...awesome. I respect your minimalist ways, and dedication to provide a quality focused, affordable tree service. Your customers are lucky.

The way I look at it, however, is that while it is a machine which requires a committment and may cost more than its worth in the beginning, it eventually pays for itself and more. It increases your output and decreases input to a degree a log arch cannot match, plus its far more versatile...do you stumpgrind? If a fella only had one piece of equipment aside from a pick-em-up and trailer, personally I'd go for a mini before a chipper.

Keep on keepin on.

See I look at that from the other side, I'd rather not put my money into things that rust and have motors... because that's just the beginning of the money spending. With an arch or a cart you don't have to worry about those $800 fixit bills popping up on you.

Not that I'm anti-hardware, I just rent that stuff when I need it and factor it in to the price. I like Reg's cart.
