Howdy Board!
Getting pretty far ahead of things right now but we're starting to put feelers out in an attempt to build a dynamic 2-3 man crew for work up on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska for the 2019 season. Needless to say up near the arctic the pool of new hires, lacks quality professional tree care types!

I'm employed by a smaller but large/well respected outfit for the area & this was my first season working with them & was cursed with the old "toss a guy at the job & see how he does" routine, which of course gets frustrating!

So here we are, many months in advance putting feelers out for any industry guys who would be interested in securing work in the Land of the Midnight Sun. Our season pretty much spans April to November & the workload kept us working solid full weeks this year. And we'd like to hit the ground running as soon as things thaw out in 2019!

We're mostly looking for a solid groundsperson or two but of course won't turn away experienced climbers, or grounds people looking to climb higher in the industry.

Must be:
18 years or older
Licensed (to drive company vehicles, insurable driving record)
Ability to drive manual trucks, operate applicable industry equipment etc
Have desire to relocate to Alaska, and one of the more beautiful parts of it!

Posting this more to just start conversations with anyone interested in making a move up to this magnificent state. Having employment lined up makes big life moves so much easier!

For the right candidate I would personally help get things lined up for such a big transition. The company owner owns a few rental properties, and has several parcels of land where the right new hire could likely land when first arriving up here. For a person wanting to more rough it instead of spending a ton on rent/housing, every laundromat has shower facilities so setting up a little camp or finding a dry cabin & just saving paychecks, could surely be a way to make bank during such a short season.

Pay is DOE of course, but ranges from $15-$35 an hour. That high mark likely isn't going to be offered since the industry is far smaller up here & we truly have the team leaders/foremen in place already, we're again looking mostly for grounds personnel.

If it's a conversation you'd like to have, feel free to just private message me here!

I'd have jumped all over that at 20/22 years old!

Contact some schools...especially if you can wait until May to get them up there. Maybe others can chime in with ideas from their localities, but in Ohio: perhaps @JD3000 could share the info at Columbus State with what he is trying to do there (but maybe not...I think the goal is to get more arborists in Ohio - not train them for Alaska!). Hocking College also has a good 2 year forestry program.

Wow, thanks for that solid advice! Never even crossed my mind to catch students coming out of Forestry Programs like that... my big thing when putting a crew together is the lack of ego that typically comes along with people in the biz after a few years, but I also dislike having to train common sense into people who only aspire to be mere labor grunts for a dollar..... forestry students are likely that perfect pocket of balance... got me all excited to start emailing schools now :) cheers!

Still, one day is not today.
