adjustable bridge

looking for pics of adjustable bridge setups. Is it possible with a prussic? If you use a prusic, do the rings push it down when you are working.

Tom D's got a nice one with a micrograb or something. Maybe he'll post a pic.

We'll just pretend we did not see that srew pin shackle

Pretend as much as you like...I know how to use wrenches, lock tite and do routine gear checks :)

Actually, I don't use the shackle anymore. The Unicender goes directly onto my bridge and stays there.

Hey Tom, nice bridge rig! What's the orange 'line' between the body and the cam of the Microcender? I'm used to seeing a SS wire there. It looks like a piece of string trimmer line. Is that a secret trick?

Jack,

Good eye!

Not a secret...I've been using that for years!

When the original wire started to fray I'd grab the Micro and the strands would poke me. It felt like an electric shock every time...yipes! When I looked for the replacement cables I came up empty handed. As I looked around the shop I tried to find some brake cables from a bike...nope...then I saw the spool of line trimmer! I had to scrape it down just a hair to get it in the shell.

That Microcender has been in use in various SRT setups for about 12-15 years. The trimmer line hasn't broken once!

Maybe you should loosen them or try a new brand. YOur panties always seem to have a strange effect on the way you present yourself.

... trimmer line, great tip, very clever solution ... I never liked the SS wire anyway ... probably "isn't sanctioned by Petzl" either, love it but I'll never tell where I got the idea, LOL. Thanks!

I was looking at the weed whacker line on Tom's rope grab too, I'd forgotten about that innovation. The twisted wire cable on my Microcender is dying after less than a year using it, and yep the broken strands have been jabbing my fingers. I'm definitely switching to trimmer line. Tom, did you anchor it with epoxy?

Petzl doesn't seem to offer a replacement and I don't want to use wire eva again!

The cable/line acts as a bit of a spring to push the cam closed. Mostly its a tether so that the cam doesn't get lost when it's opened.

The diameter of the line that I had was a little too large so I scraped it down a little. The set screws hold it in place.

This isn't a safety issue so there's no reason to be concerned about factory permission/sanctioning. The cam will still grab without a tether.

Depending on how I'm climbing or ascending I want the Unicender in different positions. When I ascend using a ropewalker type setup I can let the bridge out and the Uni is at the length to become an upper ascender. by cinching the bridge down the Uni is low and is in the position of a lower or chest ascender.

If I'm out on a limb walk and I want to move my hips up a little for a better balance I can lift my hips, pull the bridge and move up just a little. It acts like having a slack tender.

The length is set so that when it is paid out I can still reach up and move the Uni down. Just like having a hitch, you have to be able to reach up while hanging or you could get trapped in a hang in the case of an injury.

Line trimmer is really an awesome idea, I am going to try it out, my petzl ss wears out about every 6 to 8 months. My buckgrab has a coated ss wire, seems to be holding up well. My personal favorite is still the rockgrab, it is very smooth and not bulky. Anyone else use one and what do you think?

What's the need for an adjustable bridge?

I haven't tried it yet but sometimes I wish my bridge was really short; it might also be easier to connect and disconnect second crotch tie-ins if you could slack the bridge out pretty far.

I wouldn't want a bridge any longer than I already use because at times my knot is right at the limit of my reach.
