Accending Techniques

I was refering to the pantin. If the rope is not seated right and you thrust it will rip the rope a little.

I like some of the rope grabs. If I want to put 2 ropes in a tree to pull it over with precision I use a microsender to even out the rope when I bring them together to the pull point.

As far as chewing one apart it would depend on how mad I am at the time.

Backing up ascending systems is a good practice but is not required anywhere but in competition. This is a bit odd to me though. If a climber uses a friction hitch to ascend a rope they don't need a backup but it they use a mechanical they do. Why?

I backup my ascenders because I've had a twig jam the cam open before... the bee thing is a pretty compelling reason too.

You may not have to back up friction hitches on the way up because it is implied that you are with the hitch and paying attention to it. If the climber stops and wants to move horizontally, a back up knot below the friction hitch is needed whether working off the knot or just moving sideways to lanyard in.
