Calling all professors of higher learning!

A couple of my climbers and I have decided that its high time we got a seriously better handle on the bugs and such that we encounter here in northern new england.

What we're looking to do (or looking for) is some sort of university level independent study program to work through this winter.

Years ago Bob Underwood turned me on to some resources but that was several crashed harddrives ago.

We'd consider independent study, online, heck even a decent syllabus from a good bugs and crud course for trees in the northeast.

All help and suggestions welcome.

Great idea Rich. Has anyone taken entomolgy in that area, and know of the right professor/extension person? If you find the right guy and knock on his door with a plan in your hand, s/he will be glad to let you in.

I just registered yesterday for 5 credits at NCSU. 3 with my old dendrology prof on tree response to heading cuts, which I expect will become written up for the AUF journal, maybe a companion AN piece, and definitely a poster which will get me a free ticket to St. Louis in 2008. (Posters that do not come from U students do not get much consideration, as I found out this year).

2 with my old fruit trees prof on the policy of managing trees in the arboretum he manages by applying ANSI standards. He was not aware there was such a policy, but there will be when I'm done putting it in written form.

I would personally try Bob out again for the type of online learning resources you are seeking

The courses I described are ones I designed for myself. It's worth $600 for me this semester to get the oversight/mentoring by smart people I like to work with and the credibility that comes from the academic connection.

I'll also earn 5 more university credits with an A grade. Woo hoo! That and thirty cents will buy me a pack of gum. You get a lot more respect in many circles if you have a .edu in your email address. like applying for grants, getting published in journals, getting posters accepted at ISA Intl mtgs...
