When he heated that axe head up and dumped into the bucket of what I assume is oil?

Is that how steel is tempered?

Anyone know which grade of oil is best to achieve a sharpenable edge?

I went to a couple welding classes in high school. When not sipping moonshine and making the pipe stands shoot flames I remember slow cooled and quick cooled was the tempering process. Dunking in water makes the steel case hardened and brittle, slow cooling in sand or oil makes a better knife.
 
Very impressive tree. I haven't pruned very many Pecans however in this past week I pruned two. Something I noticed is that they are very good at compartmentalizing decay. Some older heading cuts only had 1cm of discoloration.
