540 trouble

Good Luck. I will be honest, purchased mine used with several other saws and fuel tank is broken. I run a small but busy chainsaw shop and haven't had time to do the repairs. I deal with several tree companies and I have repaired and tested a few. Seems like a great saw and I know that lots of people swear by them.

Well it won't stay running now. Acts like it's running out of fuel. Sounds great for a couple seconds then fades and dies. Any ideas? Did I screw up the auto tune by hogging out the baffle in the muffler? I've done a couple other saws with auto tune and they run great. Getting a little concerned as I want to use this saw on a big gray pine removal tomorrow.

If you want to try something, cut a piece of aluminum can the size of spark screen and put a hole in it about the diameter of original opening and slide it in under the screen. See what happens.
From what I understand , the saw will compensate after a couple cuts.
Also check the small stuff like plug, fuel level or any lines that could have pulled off while working on the saw .

Thanks sixgun, I took it back to the saw shop and he tried several things, found a fuel line that was partially off and leaking that made it better but didn't fix it. He said he needs to dig into it deeper and will do that tomorrow. I'm pretty sure I just pinched or pulled something and it will be an easy fix once it's found. I appreciate your help.

Got the t540 back from the shop today. He said it had a defective carb. Wasn't caused by anything I did just coincidental. I should have ran it before doing the muffler, we started it when I bought it but only ran it for less than a minute. Lesson learned. But I am glad it wasn't caused by my tinkering and I will say that getting the muffler off that saw was outside my comfort zone. Had to practically dismantle the whole saw to get it out. She's a runner now.

Hey guys, my T540 just started flooding/leaking out the baseplate recently. The timing of this may or may not have coincided with me smacking the handle hard enough to break the off switch which I had to replace. I am just wondering if you guys followed up on the diagnosis given by SixGun and if you have gotten your saws back up and running and dry? I'm just learning about the insides of saws and feel hesitant to try to follow his instructions.

Mine was leaking and flooding, took it back to the dealer, he put an upgraded vent on it which moved the vent to the top of the air box and it works fine now. Before the fix it was leaking so bad my groundmen were getting gas on them

This happened after my previous posts. And likely was the cause of those problems as well. Dealer/saw shop owner said husky is aware of the design flaw and now provides the upgrade kit.

The work looks simple enough. The access to the work looks easy but is it? Do you think I should just bring this info to my fix it guy or is it something I could get to? Thank you!

Ok. We have exceeded my patience level. I have zero computer skills @goodpredator here is the part number: suction hose 516 00 33-01
Tank vent: 513 75 15-01
Seven pages of how to replace.

And I am totally impressed with this saw after the muffler mod. It was a pain in the ass to get to the muffler but well worth it. Good luck.

Thanks so much. I bought the saw from treestuff.com i think over a year ago but I will call them up and see if they have the replacement vent. I may attempt it myself, I may not have experience but I am adventurous! Good info on the muffler mod, I personally am quite pleased with the saw stock, and don't do tons of big removals so I may not need the extra push but I will keep it in mind!
