I never seen a manufacturer's recommendation. The only thought I've given it is that I'll store buckles that might get damaged (stepped on, etc.) in the joined position. Pack buckles are usually joined, helmet buckles open. I have 40 year old Fastex buckles that still work fine with no thought given to storage.
 
I am a recreational tree climber. I also work at heights as an electrician and use a fall arrest harness for that. I find especially the fall arrest harness gets twisted and tangled in storage. If I put all the buckles together it does not get tangled.
