3D printed throw weights

I’ve got a half pint jar of mercury I can give you.
Lol. If my choices are mercury over lead I’ll use lead. Jk. I’m pretty sure it’ll be steel all the way unless something nontoxic and heavier shows up that doesn’t break the bank like tungsten seems to. Pity that.

Why add the lead at all if its at such small percentages. Nonetheless it’s still lead in the environment. The website even labels it as toxic.

They do have tungsten shot though. Unfortunately once again it’s not a financially variable alternative.

This is with steel shot. A previous post in this thread has the calculations for different fill. The ABS is so light it only accounts for a few grams so not important.

I’ll add this rare earth capture magnet which I’ll make a printed cover for similar in shape to the fatter ones. Subtract 7gm for the pedestal it’s sitting on. Scale won’t work with a magnet sitting on it it reads four times more. Lol

I haven't done any waterfowl hunting in about 15 years, I remember bismuth shot being a hot commodity back then. More dense than steel. I wonder how it compares price wise to tungsten?

Makes for little margin for a 16oz weight. I think I left a link to the price of tungsten above somewhere.

I tried out a “meteor” throw weight today and really liked it.
They are good as long as you don’t hit any important part of the tree. But I love how they bounce around to isolate. I have two and use them when I don’t give a f, or just for isolation

What did you before? The typical fabric bag? What weighs do you prefer using? I’m modifying my design for the most common weights and resilience. Cheers

I’ve used just about everything including chain links, and a welded cut down window sash weight (isolating in grand firs.

But my go to was Wesspurs pvc fabric bags. They stopped making them a while back. For a few years they made them with steel shot too!

These days I’ve been using petzl bags, they seem to hold up, and have the lead shot in a latex inner bag. My biggest complaint is the small dee ring doesn’t allow to set a friction saver.

Weights for shooting typically are 12-14 oz
Weights for hand throw 10-12oz
Weights for isolation 14-18oz

Thanks for your input. Is there any specific shape that you find better than others or quality of construction? Fabric vs hard for instance.

Let me put it another way. What would you like to see in a throw weight. What’s your shopping list for the best product, if you could design yourself? Cheers

I honestly really like the notch throw weights I grabbed a bunch when they were on sale, they're packed solid and more streamlined than the weaver bags.
