3/8" tenex

3/8\" tenex

Ok, i just bought a bunch of Tenex and its on its way. What tools do i need? Tenex is grade 1, 12 strand hollow braid rope correct? After that I'll be back to this thread to learn how to splice this stuff. Thanks a bunch.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

All you really need is some electrical tape, a Sharpie, a measuring tape and some scissors. It helps to have a piece of thin strong wire about 1' to 2' long when doubled to pull tails through. .050" piano wire is good, a coat hanger will work fine with Tenex though.

Get yourself some #4 whipping twine and a couple of big needles to stitch and whiplock.

Any piano store that does tuning and repairs will have the wire, usually in leftover spools of 4' or 5'. I bought one for $4.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

My preference is masking tape because it slides easier and is easier to tear by hand than electrical tape...but that's just getting nit-picky :)

Hit up those yellow pages to find a nearby piano store!

Re: 3/8\" tenex

Electrical tape leaves a sticky residue on the fid (coat hanger). Masking tape like nick says!

Re: 3/8\" tenex

I guess I was referring to electrical tape to simply make a fid out of the tail. That's how I spliced my first single eyes, just taped about 4" of tail and pushed it through. I suppose masking tape would slide better though.

With a wire fid I don't use tape, just bend it and pull.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

keep it going, any other tips for a starter? I ordered a 135' reel of 3/8" tenex at a very cheap price. So ill be trying to splice everything and its mother when it comes.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

I started last year and made a bunch of stuff,im a little hesitant to post pics, but not to climb and rig w/it
question, wire fid to pull, how dose the bury stay on and not get choked, dont get it.
I made a fid out of pvc and an ironwood handel drilled drilled through for 1/2"
and another w/ brass tubing for 3/8"
the hard part was pushing the fid throug w/out picking strands out of place from the middel.
also got the plastic push fids, to hard to milk

Re: 3/8\" tenex

YAY i got my spool in tonight so im going to make a list of stuff to get tomorrow and start then I will have a bunch of questions. For instruction pretty much start at samson and work from thier since its thier rope?

Re: 3/8\" tenex

Did my first eye splice just a few mins ago and after I figured out how the whole thing worked it wasn't too bad. I do have a question before I do the other end or try another. Can you taper the entire 2 fids worth you bury so that the tenex keeps the same thickness as it did before?

Re: 3/8\" tenex

and i dont know jack but im having a hard time w the cross over bunching up still like my splices beter than knots.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

Jman, are you doing a locking brummel? There are a varying opinions on how much should be tapered when you are using a locking brummell. If you are NOT doing a locked brummell, then don't taper the whole thing. You do want to have some full rope inside. That's what the outside get's to grab on to.

To my knowledge, there are no online loopie directions.

Only a locked brummell is locking. The kind you see on Yales website are not locking. I think I can make a video of the differences this weekend for you to see. A reminder email might not be a bad idea.

A pick is a pair of strands that are both heading in a different direction around the rope, meeting at one point and forming a chevron or V shape.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

2 loopies and a spider leg done. Now all i have to do is lock them down and I'm done. The Brummel that is shown in the loopie from Samson is that locking or not, because that is the one I did.

The next step is 16 strand and to continue the tenex. What types of fid and am I going to need for 16 strand? Should I just keep using the wire type or should I invest in some of the new england or the brion toss wands.n I do plan on working up to double braid and all the other types i can get my hands on.

Re: 3/8\" tenex

I'd still stick with the wire for now. The wand isn't that great for 16 strand...unless you are pulling all the core out to make a short sling.
