Re: ISC rigging blocks

Been using them almost exclusively for many years Tophopper....only ever had one issue where I thought the main bush had too much play. The dealer replaced the block and I never heard back. On a precautionary note a climber sould try to ensure that the pin of a loaded block couldn't twist amd press against the tree. Other than that, no faliures here.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

I've used them for many years as well and used them hard.
Correctly, but definitely heavy stuff.

One block was used for about 16 years now. I only had one for maybe the first 5 years.

Those first 15 years was a large amount of rope rigging and probably using that one block 3 out of 5 work days; as I did not have a crane then and only rented a crane one to two times a year. I rarily used crotches and that block has a lot of time on it.

Come to think of it, I suppose that block should be retired, huh? It does make a little bit of noise as it rolls.

I have 3 ISC 3/4"blocks, one ISC 1"block and 1 DMM large block.

Nothing wrong with the ISC and I do like how quickly they are to take apart.

I do love the DMM look and it should hold up extremely well, but ISC did not have a weakness.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

We talking the new ones or the old ones? Don't the new ones have the round edges like the DMM ones?

Re: ISC rigging blocks

I love my ISC blocks, used hard and never a problem.

I want a couple of the new ones though, they are hot as all get-out ;)

Re: ISC rigging blocks

I'm pretty sure my dmm instructions said to retire the block after a certain amount of time or regular use. 8 yrs? Can't quite remember. maybe i should find that before i post.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

Never heard about any problems, never had a problem or near miss, I use these blocks just like Reg's photos portray...

by the way, nice photos!

and we use them all the time. I am having trouble believing that there are any problems with this device.

More details! Out your source!

If there was a study or citation, I may believe it a little more, but I can barely imagine any way these things could be dangerous or faulty.

I've found the screw-lock blocks much more dangerous, as more than once I've found them nearly unscrewed! to my horror after lowering huge pieces. I've gotten into the habit of checking them almost every time. Really thinking hard about replacing them with the aforementioned spring-loaded (tried and true) kind.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

I did see (hear) an ISC block come open once -- but only once. I was running ropes for a fellow buzzer last year, when I heard him say, from above: "I've never seen that before. The block (pictured below) came open on it's own." We were blocking down a med-large poplar. The climber is a first rate arborist and had set the block and lines very well. We guessed that the block must have bounced against the stem sometime during the drop, the lowering or the unloading. The knob must have been pressed in by the stem and rolled so it released the side plate. He examined the block and everything was intact and working fine - so it probably opened when is was not under load. We continued to use the block the rest of the day without incident. But, I did run the line from further out, from then on. It does not have a design flaw. It was just a very strange sequence of events. Freakier things have happened. Fortunately, it was a light load and nothing or no one (me) got damaged.

Lesson learned (to echo Winch): It pays to inspect everything, all the time.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

gotta love the open/close spring lock mechanism of the ISC Blocks, there's a great sense of satisfaction hearing it click into place when working high above the ground, gives you that positive sound that lets you know that everything's ready to go.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

cause it's a heavy BEECH and two is better than one.

see my video at 7:25. That is two blocks, two bull ropes on that peice too. Nice to do on heavy stuff.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

Reg also mentioned that with two pulleys it gets the pulleys to the side out of the block slam zone.

I think mostly though he was showing off the twin bollard Stein.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

really?

If a log slammed a block, something very wrong is happening and that's the least of the problems.

That rope would have to be cranked up REALLY tight and absolutely no run at all to accomplish slamming into a block.

Making the most of the situation Dan more than just showing off....and it is part of my job afterall.

I think if I referred to slamming, it would've been in regards to the blocks colliding with each other if they were set too close together....the two adjacent half-hitches where the lines are tied to the log are also pushed far apart for the same reason.

Also, as I recall we had to stop that log quite abruptly and in doing so made sure it would pass between the two lines before it smashed into the spar.

And Beech is heavy stuff for sure.

But back to topic, I've hammered those Block many times year after year and never had any great cause for concern, even though I'm admittedly careful in routing the line so the pin sits on the outside.

Re: ISC rigging blocks

Reg I meant showing off as in 'demostrating'. Maybe it was that you mentioned about the rope not getting pinched or slammed by the block of wood and not the pulleys themselves.

At any rate..........great stuff!
