2014 ZigZag .... safe?????

In corrospondence with Matt at Petzl, he gave me some info on the latest ZIGZAG release with the beefed up link plates. All of the plates have been beefed up a bit, not just the ones that were having crack issues. Changes were also made in the way the links are tempered, etc. to address the issue.

The updated ZIGZAG will have a serial number 14274 or greater (manufactured October 1st, 2014 or later). These have begun to ship from Petzl, however, I can't speak to what stock dealers may have.

(From Petzl)... Also:

If in the future you do find a crack during your inspections, feel free to contact me directly, Petzl has increased the warranty period for this issue to 10 years.

So, good news on warranty replacement, as well.

Tbh, I had one but did not use it, 2 things grabbed me, the fact that its not midline attachable and the weakness in the extended links, many people are concerned and there are a lot of lovers out there.
I rate the lockjack the highest out there, based on its solid construction, user friendly and the midline convenience.
Only my thoughts on the subject.

zig zag is very high quality machine. You look at the Bulldog bone and then look at a zz and you have to wonder why they cost the same amount. One link predominantly had an issue. They reinforced that and others...no more issue. I trust my life on one daily...since they began selling them and have no concerns. Funny how many people denigrate it and have never used one.

I have used one, my mates on a job, switched back and for to the lockjack, found the lockjack easier and better, main plus was the self tending, I'm sure the ZZ self tends great on some ropes, my lockjack does on any.

Really? Ur comparing a hand made and assembled device to a mass produced one. Then go on about an issue with the mass produced one and speak of its high quality...
I'm suprised the zz doesn't cost more considering it's pretty much a 2 for 1 after the warranty replacement

and considering the parts involved could mostly be found on an old motorcycle chain.

why cannot something mass produced be of high quality? Rolex watch or Ferrari come to mind?

yeah..."really"

just curious...how is LJ "easier and better"...and how could the self tending possibly be better on ANYTHING other than a zz. It would have to have motorized tending to be better.

An LJ is better because its only the clutch that engages, the clutch can be removed midline, that adds to the drt setup. I bet you could drive over a LJ with little damage and it would still work, the self tending with tachyon was not working with the ZZ. With the LJ it's great after a few meters.

Wow. With 1/2" line, mine self tend with only a few feet of rope under them. I would point out, that to date not a single person has fallen from cracked link plates, according to Petzl, and their bulletins indicate that they don't feel the problem increases the risk of actually falling. I think the Chicken Little "sky is falling" rhetoric is rather overblown, myself. I've had a glazed prusik drop me several feet on the rope before it grabbed... is that proof that we're all going to die if we use a hitch climber setup? In my communications with Petzl, I got the impression that they were doing everything the company can to address the issue, were taking it very seriously, and were quite generous with their replacement policy... to the point of extending the warranty for this issue to ten years. Not many companies have voluntarily gone this far, that I can remember. I think Version 3 will solve the problem, and I don't think Petzl will go bankrupt because of the product's past issues. In fact, I'm willing to bet they sell the hell out of the things.

Well climbing is risky, if you have used a fig8 and dropped off high buildings, mountains, rocks or bridges you can think differently.
Tree climbing is different, taking steps at a time and being careful with saws, rope knowledge is important, I completely glazed a full length of rope doing a head bomb off a 120ft viaduct, that taught me a lesson, so it's best to check things if your having a wild time.
