2006 ITCC location?

Light'en up Tom,
MSA can't buy the beer sorry. But we will have a beer garden for your enjoyment, There may be someone who abuse's it but that shouldn't penalize the rest of us adults. I think it would be un-american and un-hospitable to ban beer from the event. Let's hope some idiot doesn't spoil it for everyone else. /forum/images/graemlins/icon911.gif

Yeah, like by only providing bud or miller lite. /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif If you're gonna have beer, treat the out-of-towners to a local brew...Summit Ale.

This afternoon I found a disc that Spidie went to me a while ago. He put a whole bunch of things on the disc. Included were copies of some of the threads from the ISA page. There was lots of great reading.

One of the threads was about serving beer at the 2001 Milwaukee ITCC Field Day. There were about 17 people who posted comments. It would be worth reading if you have any interest in history.

I edited the names and assigned numeric screen names to the individuals who posted.

Interesting. Was there any comments on the forum after the event?

I like the whole "...don't cry in your beer when Mark Chisholm and other Americans get beat by a foreigner..." /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Hey, wait a minute, wasn't that 2001? /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There were some strong points made from both sides. Does the alcohol add anything to the event? What is the public perception? On the other hand, spectators at all major sporting events are almost encouraged to drink adult beverages.

Did I miss read the last bits of that or did someone think that we should all dress for work at the event?

If I remember correctly, there wasn't any post-ITCC discussion.

It seemed like the person was having some fun with what was said about the event being a work day and expecting everyone to show up dressed for work. Of course, all of the judges and techs are expected to dress for work. There have been techs that showed up on Saturday AM to help at the TCC that had to go and change clothes or buy some long pants or boots before they could go to "work" inside the ring.

Right. I just read the last two posts.

I would like to hear what these people all thought about how the event went over. I remember a bunch of people talking about the issue before we went there, but I don't remember much talk after. Were there any "I told you so" comments?

Tom, were you part of that thread? If I were to guess, I'd say yes. And, I know which number I'd guess you were. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You sooo smaht Mark!

Having beer at the event is unlikely to cause any drunkeness or anything. The issue is more about appearances and what belongs on the jobsite. To me, it goes along with tucking in the tails of your shirt, finishing the ends of your rope, shaving or trimmming your beard, being polite to clients on and on.

The comments I heard after the event were very positive Admittedly that’s coming from the crowd I was hanging out with, the untucked and messy hairdo tree people.
People said that it was nice to have a cold one after looking at all the venders and watching people climb all day in the sun. To be able to sit down in the grass at 2:30 with a nice cold beer and watch the finale climb off tops off the day just right.
And for the competitors that didn’t make it to the finale climb for whatever reason that they may be going over in their heads. They way be dirty, scratched and brused, and a cold beer may be first and foremost on their minds.
People also got a big kick out of the fact that it was a booth full of real nuns that were serving it up.
So I think it went over well in Milwaukee, but I’m not responsible for any mayhem that may ensue from it at future competitions.

I think it definitely gets boring quick for people who are not really into it. I would vote let them enjoy their beer, so it can be more of a celebration with good vibes.

But like a previous post said, you have to worry about that one idiot that ruins it for everyone. We had a guy like that one year. There's no way the Illinois guys don't know who I'm taliking about. He was soooo obnoxious. I have a vhs tape of it, and he is the only thing that can be heard. (The year we had blue shirts.)

Maybe we could have a judge who's job it is to say "quiet please" like they do in tennis? Do they serve beer at tennis matches?

Yes they serve beer at tennis (my favorite sport) matches, and of course baseball games and other slow-paced events. Thanks to Tom and KC for digging that thread up.

How a beer-sipping or even -swilling spectator alters the professionalism of the event is way beyond my perception.

Rumi you better trim that thing on your chin, or braid it into cornrows maybe, so thou shalt not besmirch the image of the Arborist!
And shine them shoes while you're at it boy!

Hmmm... at my company (Twin Cities engineering firm) we have an annual pig roast and beer is served in kegs. I am certain that if the public were invited, there would be no beer. All about public perception of our company, employees, and the industry.

That said, as a spectator at ITCC, I would enjoy a beer and wouldn't think twice about it.
