I wonder how many thousands of gallons of (bar) oil per day we as arborists, collectively spray into the environment off the end of our bars?
We can easily change our oil habit in this respect. Substitute canola oil for your bar lube, it's OK, it works perfectly fine.... that is if you can get past the brainwashing....... let me rephrase...... the commonly held convention that tackified petroleum oil is the only way.
I am nine years into using vegetable oil as bar lubricant. If it in any way harmed the saw, or did not perform as well as tackified bar and chain oil, then I would not be endorsing it to my Arborist brothers.
I did not know that pouring a quart of oil into the gulf was a felony. I do know, however, that certain countries have deemed it illegal to use petroleum oil in chainsaw bar and chain lube systems. As a professional arboricultural society here in the United States, we haven't quite caught on that petroleum based oil in a bar and chain system is just not necessary, that off-the-shelf, grocery grade vegetable oils (canola, soy, corn, cottonseed) work just fine.
We talk a big story about changing our oil habit. This is one way you can actually do something-- without any additional cost, without modding your saws, without anything other than making a different choice.
Really. It's that easy.
Thank you for the excellent work and time on the video, DanielSon. You rock.
