In my opinion and my failure that happened last week. If you are doing any dynamic rigging better to stay with the 10 to 1 safety factor for your rigging. so that 1" block is useless to me. I wouldn't use that thing if they gave it to me for free. It would be the weak link in the chain and i have seen a broken sling i really don't want to see a broken block. If the math doesn't add up to me being able to safely butt hitch 4000lbs then I'm not interested in buying anything. We have very large trees here and if the scenario ever happens again where i'm looking at having to butt hitch greater to 40" diameter wood i want to be prepared.

Doesnt 10 x 4000 = 40,000 which is less than 68,000?

And really who butt hitches 4,000 lb pieces? Reg??

4000 X 2= 8000 the actual load on the block from a four thousand pound piece. hence the sling failure. load on the half hitch around 75 % of the load hence the cover failure on the 3/4" stable braid. I do not want that happening again. I don't want to have to try and make crazy stupid small azz cuts on a tree that big again. a mentor of mine said they used to use cable a truck and one inch logging chain in the late 70's, I bet that would rattle your brains. Why is it crazy to you to cut a 4' or 5' block? with the size of the stems and the wind load a tree that size has seen i'm not worried about breaking anything except my rigging. have you not seen the loads applied to a rigging spar in a multiple tree dismantle operation? They didn't make big rigging for no reason. I should have bought this stuff three years ago, procrastination is a bird. I don't recommend some green horn start going around blocking down 2' trucks with a 1" rigging line taking 16'ers, but some times the ability to negative rig a large crotch or section of wood is needed here.

Sorry, it's a piece of history. I can't part with it. It's the only one I've ever seen.
I do, however, have some 1" Yalex (black) if you are interested in a spliced eye sling.

I thought about dual lowering lines but i don't like all the equipment that it takes to do that, I can only imagine how long it takes to rig a block using doubled 5/8" rigging line then two bollards and then off chance that one line takes more load than the other. dual line negative rigging is not for me

I agree, It's cumbersome. But the couple times I've needed to do it, it's worked well.

Don Blair owns the patent rights to the Hobbs Blocks and at the moment he isn't making the 1" anymore due to a lack of people wanting to buy them.

Now with the new 1" CMI block, I doubt that he'll put out another batch, but I don't want to speak for Don, as he would not appreciate it.

Spoke with Ed Hobbs last year about getting one and even he doesn't have any anymore.

Good luck finding one.

What were the chances of that Jeff. Ian sure hooked you up. Nice one, this is why I like the buzz. One helping another, very cool. A new one to boot too. Hope things work out on your next big fella, no broken slings now.

Next time anyone sees a 1" Hobbs block on Ebay, there's a good chance it's the one ripped off from me in October, 2015 (bought from Don Blair about 10 years ago). I'm thinking of replacing it with the DMM 6.7 ton WLL block. They call it an "impact block", so is it possible there is something in the engineering that makes it legit to rate it at 1/5 for wll instead of 1/10?
