“Rope Only” Canopy Anchor??

I’m curious if there is a knot that can capture the working side of the line (midline), while also installing the retrievable side at the same time. Basically setting up a running knot without having to feed the tail thru a butterfly and no extra hardware… heard it’s been done!

Bowline on a bight

Bowline with a yosemite backup and then a separate retrieval line connected by a sheet bend. Or if you have both lines spliced use a locker XRSE to join them.

Both the bowline and alpine require a bunch of tail tucking!

As mentioned the easiest is just tying a second line, or the tail of your climb line to the leg of the rope in a bowline.

Typically rope on rope canopy anchors don't get used in my climbing style bc they don't retrieve well with any redirects, however I do use them on crane jobs.

For crane work, if I need a rope in the tree I will set a running bowline with anywhere from a 5-15' long tail. It only takes a moment to pull that much rope through the knot and the crane can take you right back to that point for retrieval, so friction isn't a concern.

Bowline on a bite is a knot of its own. Bowline WITH a bite is simply a Bowline tied with a bite and is the canopy anchor that I use most often. I find a butterfly very impractical.

When you have a minute could you illustrate this? Are you saying your tying the bowline with a bite of line? Or are you capturing the bite with a device? I hate being confused!! Lol

I use it as an anchor occasionally. Sometimes when I can‘ isolate the desired union and want to SRS up to it. More often when I want to switch from SRS to MRS or vice versa.

Works as a redirect too. I use a 16 kN gate carabiner with a trap. Didn’t have one for the pics

I think what Kevin is getting getting at is the difference between taking a bight of line and trying a standard bowline (bowline with the bight) versus taking a bite of rope, tying a loose overhand knot, capsizing it and forming it into a bowline ( on the bite).

In my pics the opposite side of line is captured between the loops of the bowline on the bight and a carabiner is put through both loops trapping the line.

Me thinks only arborists make this distinction between variations of bowline. ! Although Kevin is correct that they are very different knots.

i like it when I’m basal anchored and just want to make it a canopy anchor simply on the spot no nada extra nuthin.. then the down side basal acts as retrieval leg .
doesnt get much more kiss than that
and as noted it’s useful to add redirect anywhere as well..

To be clear, OP wanted to see a rope-only (no hardware) solution for capturing the running end of a climb line. The running bowline tied with a bight was suggested. This is what that might look like. I have never tried this for climbing. If I was going to try it, I would back it up with a carabiner. I would love to see how Kevin implements this for climbing, or if he meant something else.

Patrick, can bouncing up and down loosen this by any chance? Or because it is using a bite it does not. I use this when pulling trees over or lifting thing up using a truck. Breaks easy.

I've never used it for climbing. I doubt it would loosen up, but I would back it up with a krab anyway. Just showing what it looks like...

I often see pictures of things demonstrated only as the partial aspect in a system- CTSP taught me that it’s best to show the complete picture, since things can get taken out of context and vital steps that the author assumed would be understood are not… not to single you out. This is commonplace here. But a good example of finishing the system since we are talking about life loads here.

If the tail wasn't full length you could just thread it down through the loop of the bight, no hardware.
