So I made my own splicing wand.

I thin that would offer too much temptation to put a LOT of force on it. If that is something you really want, despite my warning, I'll be happy to do so.

So I made my own splicing wand.

If anyone wants one I should be able to nail out a couple more. Problem is since I got one prototype done I'm not 100% sure where a good price on em would be. I think that if I ask $70 plus shipping it should cover enough of my time and materials I won't object to making them much.

How to be an Excellent Climber---from the Groundie

Any books to recommend to go with the advise? Preferably with pictures for us slow kids.

Hmm, probably$15-20 to ship it. Somewhere around 3-4 hours of time to make one and about $20 in materials (small heavy wall tubing ain't cheap)

Running splices home with a winch?

No worries, are you using a splicing wand or fids?

So I made my own splicing wand.

Good! I was eyeballing it from a couple of youtube videos. I did get to use this one to do a couple splices and it worked wonderfully, I have the nose of the wand rounded fairly well and it's yet to snag on anything.

Running splices home with a winch?

Thank you for replying on this. I had been scratching my head for some time trying to puzzle out why such a thing was being done and how.

Running splices home with a winch?

Yes, I do know how to do splicing, however the idea of using a winch or hydraulic assistance to place tension on the line was not something I had considered before.

So I made my own splicing wand.

Oh yeah, the wand pictured is quarter inch diameter and about 12 in of usable length

So I made my own splicing wand.

Doing a ball tip, and making the wand longer are both ludicrously easy tasks. What sort of OD do you think would be good for the wand itself? I'm hesitant to go below 1/8 in for the rod holding the splicing loop as it gets a bit more touchy to machine that small accurately.

So I made my own splicing wand.

I couldn't bring myself to buy one at the price, so I figured since I have a lathe and generally know what I'm doing with metal I'd make one. The keeper setup to hold the tube in place seemed a bit chintzy to me, so I replaced it with a setup similar to what you see in a pin vise. While it works...

What kind of rope is this and how do I splice it?

Line for snatching logs out, don't know the load cap on it, so not anything I'm comfortable using for climbing or rigging.y

Running splices home with a winch?

That answered it, are you actually pulling the whole rope from the eye you just spliced to get it to bury?

What kind of rope is this and how do I splice it?

I cut off another small section and teased it apart, there is no core strand, and I miscounted the first go round, it's 18 strand not 17 strand. I'm quite sure there is no core to it.

What kind of rope is this and how do I splice it?

Worst case I'll run a brummel in it and see how that performs.

What kind of rope is this and how do I splice it?

Anything can be spliced. I think I'm going to have to try and splice it as a very very tiny piece of round plait.
  18. G

What kind of rope is this and how do I splice it?

I cut a short section off after taping the end and counted 17 strands and it is not a hollow braid, I would like to splice eyes in each end, I've got plenty of practice doing double braid, parallel core, hollow, and both 3 and 4 strand rope, but this is odd. Honestly I could even swear I've seen...

Running splices home with a winch?

Currently I've been milking my splices home either by hand or with a milking strap, however I've noticed that some folk here and there on the internet have mentioned using winches and come-alongs to do such. Could someone explain this to me?
