I think the lowly figure 8 could be the most underrated, simple cheapest rigging device. In a pinch it can be used as a lowering device, a rigging plate, a self leveling spider leg thingy using a single piece rope, it can advance a Prussic like a small pulley. Used as a slider for a zip line...
We take calculated risks sometimes as climbers. Its takes years of experience to know whats safe or what isn't. Even then sometimes its a crap shoot. I lost a buddy 25 years ago catching a top in a healthy green tree. The big pine broke at the base. It haunts me even today.
But I do hazardous...
My worse fear happened. A young under trained climber, only 21 years old died on this project taking a 20ft top out of a 100ft dead pondorosa. It didn't run. The tree broke beneath his feet. Him and the top fell into the HV lines killing him un front of his whole crew.
The week before a young 21...
I'm in central Ca. The contractor I worked for has called it quits. Im going to give it a week before I leave too. I am an above average climber. I have many years doing this. I am also an arborist. I prune to ANSI standeds.
I can handle a foreman position. If you needed one.
If your in central...
Are you still working? The contractor I worked for is calling it quits. So are lots of others. If you have work lm a professional climber. Im already badged in with P&J. Im in San Andreas.
Let me know if youed like to talk.
Ive been rigging out trees over 30 plus years, I'm no rookie. That being said these dead white firs are a different animal. Their a scary tree when they've been dead for a while.
They have opened my eyes to looking at the forces created dureing rigging operations. I don't have a specific tree...
I know there is a lot of info, charts and what not on ziplines. But most seem to be geared for horizontal or slightly sloped and wire rope for the most part.
I would think the dynamics are changed dramatically when a steeper angle of decend is used and rope with its build in stretch, plus any...
I've done that in the past with 3 strand rope for lowing big branches, but it twisted up the rope really bad.
I've used the spar and a stub to hang tops and it works really well, but it'll burn up a braided rope real bad. You can even take more then one wrap, or leave slack between the two wraps...
Thank you guys. It makes perfect sense now I've seen it. Its close to what I was thinking with using two trees to share the load, except this does share the load minimizing force at the top.
Any reason a steel biner couldn't be used in place of the 2ed pulley or better yet a x-ring? Other then...
Im getting ready to buy a safbloc hear soon. I like the idea of halving the forces up there.
But why couldnt you use a small portawrap as your rigging point up in a tree for neg. rigging? I've often used a half hitch wrapped around the spar and a stub to rig out small pieces but its hard on rope.
I have and use several of those techniques. But could you explan how you would set up two points to neg. Rig a top. Two ropes right. You'd need a skilled ropeman.
I've giving a lot of thought to using a safblock,, how do you mean using doubles safe blocs rigging?
Ok this might sound crazy, and I have no reason to do this, but if you had to climb a really sketchy top in a dead conifer. Has anyone ever set slings every 8ft or so running your climbing line throu biners, either self belaying or ground crew feeding line so if there was a failure under the...
I never thought about back guying to prevent or minimize side loading a stick. But on some of these dead and brittle trees applying any new stresses can have bad consequences.
We adapt fast. Where changing how we approach these trees. I'm learning to not trust these trees or take anything for granted. Really respecting those brittle dead tops. Today I broke out a pole saw and and removed an extra 10 ft of branches on the top and set the line with it so I didn't have...
I have a couple questions I hope someone can help me with. If I set up a single rope through a pulley on a tree opposite the one I'm rigging. Run it to the tree being rigged and secured with a bowline under my face cut. Tieing a short line to the piece im dropping and clipping it to the rope so...
We all know different trees have different characteristics. This is true of live trees verses dead trees too.
I recently started working with these big really dead douglas firs. It seems I have a new learning curve here. These trees are dangerous as hell. We dropped one. It was straight up and...
