I used to take it personally when those kinds of interactions happened. Now I could care less. One less set-up I have to do. The Util Forester gets paid the big bucks to do the hostage negotiations, not me. At the first sign of a hiss fit, I'm outta there.
what kinda piece would you use for daily carry as a trimmer? I mean, what if you dropped your Walther and a groundsman ran it through the chipper? Maybe something cheaper... But then again, you don't want to daily carry with a Lorcin or Hipoint, although those doorstops might be more...
I have heard popping sounds from many alder and maple spars, but never really thought something like that would happen.
Had the tree recently been through a high stress event of any kind?
Will this change any of your work habits?
Thanks for posting, this is one of the best ever... glad you're...
ever since I threw out my first wheel chock I've heard about "directional pruning".
I work under supervisors who see every tree adjacent to the wires as some sort of espalier project....
The thinking seems to be that you can "train" a tree to grow contrary to it's genetic blueprint by gently...
Re: How many actual line clearance trimmers on sit
Working for one of the big line clearance contractors is always going to be a fiasco. Let me elaborate...
Electrical utilities who wise up and get rid of their in-house trimming crews divest themselves of a huge headache. No rigs, no...
I had a few ISA Merit Badges, and have let all of them lapse except for the CA. Gathering all the box tops and sending them in was enough of a pain, but the real killer was the check I had to write. For what? The CA has some limited value, the rest were just vanity.

The majority of our fleet is tracked by gps, not to monitor the workers, but to find ways to cut fuel costs and emissions.
We have a rather massive fleet, (in the thousands) and we leave a large footprint on the environment.

What role does the GPS monitoring play in...
Not real excited to recieve a survey that is a blatant marketing/demographic effort, under the guise of the ISA helping me achieve my "professional goals and education" desires.
I looked at the video. For someone used to working around lines, it's routine work, bucket or climbing.
I agree with Tom & countryboy completely. Here's how to get the power company off their ...
Call the power company and ask who you're speaking to, and let them know you're...
No forms here... the Utility prints off a circuit map, and a Util Forester drives the thing out and makes notes on the map (turn-arounds, removals, special notes, etc), and then it is given to a crew. The crew keeps that map with them, and marks off spans as they are completed, and the tally...
lots of instructional and interesting videos on the 'buzz.
but "james the narcoleptic tree cutter" is still the top of the heap. that clip just never gets old.
Re: Asplundh doing line clearance pruning with spi
yeah, you're not going to change the culture overnight. That said, if you demonstrate skill and become a valuable, sought after worker, after a few weeks... people will listen to you. Coming in brand new and trying to change the status quo...
For those that currently work for a line clearance company, are you held to a system to quantify progress, such as line miles or tree counts?
In my present position, we are made constantly aware of "map time". It's used as a vague tool to measure progress, imply a lack of progress, and to to...
