Winter rec climbing in Connecticut, January 2011

Hey I just asked the missus and we could sure do some climbing here in Lil Rhody. There are about 13 big tall Oaks, a huge cherry, and an awesome hillside grove with a good variety of stuff. There's a buncha cedars mixed in there. There's also a low broad maple that's great for smaller /newer...

large split in Maple, is it appropriate for support?

awww boy - Well you all will be glad to hear it's coming down. I told them to put some mega ratchet straps around it in the meantime, and the crack was growing. I am traveling this weekend so couldn't get to it until Tuesday. They are rightly freaked out and called someone else who can do it...

large split in Maple, is it appropriate for support?

Yea, thanks again for the encouragement. I am drawing up an estimate for the takedown right now. I noticed a Mother Mary at the base of the tree, it's what I covered with my finger in the photo, an altar for her Mother. I told her I will carve the stump into a true altar; and we are already...

large split in Maple, is it appropriate for support?

Thanks again for the quick replies. I am truly concerned about the tree on their house. They have a 5-month old; I mentioned they may want to sleep in a further section of the house on a windy day. So making a plan pronto is essential and I am grateful for the input. The tree is quite close...

large split in Maple, is it appropriate for support?

Thank you ~ Question : @Reach , why would you lean toward steel cable over the rope system? We are coastal here, and my experience is whenever I find cables, they are falling apart with salty air corrosion. However, I recognize that this is a tried and true method, maybe I am just not...

large split in Maple, is it appropriate for support?

Greeting folks, I was called about a maple tree that is splitting, This just opened up recently, and gotten worse in a few windy storms. The bark at the bottom just released too. They called asking my opinion and whether I can cable it. The left side of this photo aims toward the house. I...

    Hollow Braid For Soft Fid

I have seen it, and followed that at least one time.. did I just completely forget? Wouldn't surprise me. Will take a look at the book again. Try doing it this way to see if I find a preference.

    Hollow Braid For Soft Fid

I always use Samsons splicing book. This was surprising to see them insert the core first, rather than the cover first. May give this a try some time.

Feather Filing a Silky Hayate 6.5 pole saw blade

Thanks for the good word! Yea that's a way nicer price. And I can feel like a real woodworker ordering from such a prestigious catalog I've only fawned over.

Feather Filing a Silky Hayate 6.5 pole saw blade

I have been thinking about doing this lately. the Sugoi is at a point where it's lost an edge but it's not quite calling me to replace this one yet. For how much love I have for Silkys I should look for a good file.

*Solo rigging* Whatcha using? Swivel Bail Shackle and similar methods/?

Thanks for sharing it. twas a lightbulb when I saw the release action. I stuffed the whole rig with 95' of small rope in a lil camera messenger bag i found free. just letting out the rope I need and feeding it back in. making the whole set up quick and simple is a big deal. I can't be...

*Solo rigging* Whatcha using? Swivel Bail Shackle and similar methods/?

I recreated this setup and used the other day, it worked perfectly. I spliced a hook on some 3/8" stable braid and used my "first try" friction saver, ( splices good, but not life-support confidence) with a girthed sling. Looking forward to giving it some more action. I can see how it's a bit...

    Looking for the ideal rope.

glad I got a length of Yale 11.7, loved it from day #1; and just chose to get the same rope again, as that first line shortens and heads for retirement... Guess I am easy to please. I have Velocity as well, another great rope. Having choices gives the right line for the day. I also will start...

    Update on double-eye ended lanyard

when I was watching the original video and @moss is getting ready to pull the shackle around the tree the first time, I straight up backed away from the screen in instinct.. having been hit in the face once (lightly) retrieving a steel biner I am even backing away from the pixels.

Jailbreaker New type of porta wrap

sounds great. watching a bit of video, I think one could slip the rope off one of the bollards if needed, rope would bounce a bit. but like you say, maybe that isn't as much of an issue as it is with too many wraps. would be fun to try it out some time.

Jailbreaker New type of porta wrap

on a regular porty one can add or remove a wrap, carefully, holding strong with the tail of the rope. I can't see a way you could do this under tension with this jailbreak thing. That seems like a major drawback.

New father to a Captain Hook looking for setup advice

Thanks I definitely want to try it with the link. I would like to splice something on, but also thought it may be nice to have that extra rope available to turn into a short MRS as well, where being able to remove the hook is nice. I have velocity on there now, yet also looking for smaller...
