Yeah. Had to go about 40’ out on a limb walk. Made sure I had 8” TIP and didn’t put too much pressure on it or the limb. Cuts very easily with a hand saw. First time in one of them. Surprisingly strong for its light weight.
That cross section was actually the poison Ivy vine!! Never seen one that large the outer perimeter shows the white urushiol oil oozing out.
You’re right paulownia has a hollow pith.
Worked on the largest in the state paulownia according to a county official 30 years ago. Performed end weight reduction while removing a mass of branches from a slate roofed barn.
Also, tried to arrest the massive poison ivy vines strangulating the canopy. Hopefully the protective clothing...
This may not for your situation as you seem to have a defined scope and objective already but I recently trimmed a silver maple which had been previously topped twice. All deadwood was removed (quote a bit including a leader) Where the previous heading cuts were made and 5 epicormics were...
Happy to see a new video from you. I just rewatched many of them yesterday including the truckers hitch, fiddle block, and the 3X MA with 2 pulleys vids.
Some of you may know of Jed from the Guilty of Treeson videos on YouTube. He’s affectionately referred to as “Inbred Jed”
I found out this morning that he was killed felling a big leaf maple and a limb broke out. This is all the info I can gather at this point.
One of his coworkers and...
I saw this fungus in a mature red oak I was inspecting. I believe it’s coral spot nectria canker.
Located in Maryland.
It’s only in several locations and they are all dead branches. These branches are in areas which don’t receive as much light so I’m not sure if the fungus killed the branch...
Had a friend over today to help me finish the 130’ tulip poplar in my backyard. He ran the ropes perfectly. This is by far the largest tree I’ve worked in. I started learning trees from media (books, forums, YouTube, etc) about 14 months ago. I have a full time plumbing job and a family but I...
Re: Which way are they saying the lean is going? Logs or felling cuts?
This was a head leaner situation- falling into the lean. Lean was approximately 25* from vertical and was the whole tree.
The post sounded totally sounded back asswards to me and want against common tree sense, but, what do I know being fairly green.
I don’t think I’ve ever learned anything from Facebook. It’s just about seeing all the train wrecks and getting a good laugh. If a new climber asks serious questions...
I heard on a Facebook page that when falling a heavy head leaner:
-Face cut as deep as possible
-Make your back cut directly level with the bottom of your conventional fave cut
This is supposed to prevent chairing.
What do you say?
I bore cut and sometimes wrap a chain for belt and...
I’m not sure as I haven’t put eyes in his situation yet. He’s only told me about what happened and his thoughts going forward. Im trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible before I see his yard. Those are very good points regarding sound wood. We’ll have to see what the others...
Matias, I hear you on the maintenance. I’ll lay it all out for the folks and let them make an educated decision.
Sean, so where do you clip? The very ends of the limbs?
The thing with this job is I’m not as familiar with the needle bearers. A deciduous would be an easier reduction in my mind. How would one reduce an excurrent tree?! The topping is sounding like the least worst way to go. It can be cut to where they cannot hit the home and maintain it as the...
