Nice, it's like your own mini crane:) Thats definitely been on the gear-to-get-list for me. It's a great feeling to have your work trucks packed with all the necessary tools to tackle (almost) anything you come across. It's very hard to say what my favorite one in the arsenal is; it is so...
Thanks man, much appreciated. Yeah, crane was a no-brainer on that one. The other ones not caught on film that had to be pre-limbed before the crane were plenty sticky ;)
I couldn't agree more, it can be very hard to do the work justice through filming. I feel that videos using only a helmet cam definitely do not do it justice, Sorry StihlMad :). The best videos show multiple angles and perspectives but none more powerful than with a drone.
We spent almost a week on the entire job. There were 13 removals in all, and none of them were easy. We used the crane for 5 of them and he was on-site for 6 hours. All the trees could have been done without a crane, but for what we spent, it was a no brainer. Using a crane takes out a...
Always. It's alot easier to dial in the weight of the piece when it is a single stem. When picking pieces with several limbs (long limbs at that) it gets trickier. The pick shown through the gopro footage wasn't the smoothest and thats just the way it goes. Some come off smooth as silk, some get...
You're probably right, something like a snap cut right? Normally they come off smoother than the one that was shown in this vid but I equate that to the number of long limbs on the tree thus making it harder to estimate the weight of the pick and how much to pretension.
Simply put: an oversight by the homeowner (original homeowner). I suppose you could say that they had something unique and special for a great many years as the camp was last renovated in the 70's, but just like everyone who builds a house around a tree (it actually happens quite a bit up here...
Thank You, I'm glad you used that adjective, my sentiments exactly about the music. I've been looking forward to getting some video that would be worthy of some heavy/haunting music, and with the drone footage this one qualified. I do have alot of footage from this job between the gopro, ground...
This is one of several trees that were removed during a huge week long project. This property had been neglected for many years (hence the long-since-been-dead pine only six inches from the roof line). This tree was right on the corner of the house and falling it from the ground would have left...
Cool stuff! When you say cut from the bottom, do you mean make a snap cut so the sky crane can just break them off when they come to grab them? If so, how many of them in any get knocked over by wind or just fall down from the time they are cut to the time they get picked? Logging out west is so...
That was my thought exactly. Rig it just below where it is hung up, get as much material off the top as possible, then chunk it from the base, continuously/periodically lowering and chunking. The advantages are: removing the climber from the tree bearing the brunt of the rigging forces, and...
Good point, not sure how to define big or small myself, I have never been taught the basic fundamentals of rigging, just watched youtube videos and read a bunch. I think I gravitate towards overkill when it comes to rigging; I have always used 5/8 for almost everything unless super light...
