It looks perfectly normal to me. You describe it is superficial so I think it may be just that, unless it is removing the cork cambium do not worry too much.
I think the first thing to be considered is soil type and volume. I think you will find that the soil is not only too small a volume but it is dominated by construction waste and lime(stone) from mortar with very little to no organic matter.
