    Petzl ZigZag & Zillion Recall

What are everyone's thought on the new Petzl recall/safety warning for the ZigZag and Zillon laynard adjuster? (here is the link) The Petzl website gives inspection instructions and states that if properly inspected for function it is safe to continue using. I really like my ZZ but I have...

    Singleops

Looking for some input on the Singleops business management program. I own and operate a tree service with 8-10 crew members, growing a plant health care side, and have one full time sales arborist. We have been using Quickbooks online version for estimates and bookkeeping. This program looks...

    Poison Ivy Protocol

I have always just attacked the stuff and washed off the best I could afterwards. I think I just have a low sensitivity to it. We did a removal a couple days ago with a big PI vine on it. Today we have one guy at the Dr. and two other who may end up going. What is the best product out there...

    Brush Bandit-1290XP=Bad Engine

I have a Bandit 1290 XP that needs a new engine or rebuild. It has about 3000 hours on the machine and was chipping great until the engine went. Anybody interested or have any advice on the best course of action to take. My thoughts have been selling it to someone for parts of scraping the thing.

    Sterling Rope Hawk Carabiner

I picked up a couple of these at last TCIA expo and had not used them at all. Recently I gave them to one of my employees to try out. He told me that they were sticking a little, so I gave him some graphite. He said that helped but if he let it close slowly it would still catch sometimes. I took...

    Climber Falls

Not much detail on what happened, other than a climber fell during a removal. Here is the link to the local news article. I see this company around town enough to know they are not big on PPE. Hopefully he is OK.

    Bucket=Crane

Just saw one of our competitors using their aerial lift like a crane to load rounds from a pin oak removal. The pieces were probably 30" diameter and 2-3 ft long, 600-900 lbs. Wouldn't want to ride in one of their lifts.

    Vermeer 252 vs. 352

I am in the market for a stump grinder and am looking for some advice. I want something versatile that can handle small to medium size stumps and also be self propelled. I have used the Vermeer 252 and it is OK as long as it has good teeth on it. Is the 352 a big step in power and functionality...

    De-Christmas Lighting a Norway Spruce

This was a pretty interesting little job, about an eighty foot Norway Spruce with more lights on it than you would believe. Nearly every limb had lights zip tied all the way to the tip. The zip ties were starting to girdle the limbs. It must have taken a week to install. It took us with a...

    Rope severed by carabiner

The article linked here is about a rock climbing accident. A quick-draw left for fall protection on a route had been worn to a sharp enough edge to cut the rope when the climber took a lead fall. Just a reminder to inspect your gear before you trust your life to it.

    Saw Pod

Just got a Saw Pod the other day. I have only used it a couple of times, it will take some getting used to but I think I like it. The main problem I have with it is the bottom velcro strap will not adjust tight enough. My wife is going to shorten it for me and it should work fine. Has anyone...

    Champion bur oak

We pruned and installed a lightning protection system in the national champ bur oak today. It is an amazing tree: 93" DBH, just over 100' tall, and nearly 100' spread. Unfortunately didn't get pics of my own, but the local paper came out. Here is a link to the article and a few pics.

    Dead Pine Removal

This was a job that I worked on a couple of years ago while I was with Bartlett, in the San Francisco Botanical Garden. The tree to be removed was a Monterey Pine that had been dead for some time and we did not feel good about sending a climber up and there was no bucket or crane access. Our...
