I just rechecked & there are no new cones this year. All the cones are from last year. Seems very strange ! ?

Evergreen Conifer w/ Purple Cones – Not Korean Fir ?

What is this: Evergreen Conifer w/ Purple Cones – Not Korean Fir ? My neighbor planted this several years ago, NE Ohio; but does not remember what it is. Today it is ~ 9 ft tall. Last year it had very purple cones during the growing season. It does not appear to be a Korean Fir which has cones...

    Incense Cedar Cones – finally

Incense Cedar Cones – finally I planted a seedling in 2005 as a “test plant” from Holden Arboretum. (NE Ohio) The tree has been “rubbed” by deer a couple of times; ~ ½ of trunk diameter; but recovered. Today I noticed quite a few 1/8”, pale green “cones”, on many branch tips. I am surprised...

    Beech Leaf Disease

I have posted several times since 2016, that the condition of my Beech change from year-to-year. Some years they seem better; the next year worse. The young small ones have a higher tendency to die. I have been surprised that large trees seem to hang on; they look terrible but still alive.

    Beech drying / checking

I applied 5 thin coats of Tung Oil to the bowls. Several surprises for me: The contrast of wood color variation did not increase significantly; this may be due to a couple of thin mineral oil coats applied by @Njdelaney after turning the bowls. The Tung oil dried/polymerized very quickly...

Columnar Oak w/ Very Long Nut Acorn - not English Oak

That's very possible. The road that it was next to has been changed since I lived there. My guess is that it is gone. Someday, I'll make it back & check. @ATH - Thanks

Columnar Oak w/ Very Long Nut Acorn - not English Oak

Thanks. The leaf lobes aren't quite right. The top crowns of these are too pointed; my tree's crown was more rounded in proportion to the columnar body.

Columnar Oak w/ Very Long Nut Acorn - not English Oak

As a kid, back in 1960’s in Eastern Ohio, we had an unusual (to me) Oak Tree. It had a some-what columnar tree shape, and unusually long acorn nuts. (twice the length of normal oak nut) The acorns look like English Oak, but the tree form is very columnar, not spreading. I called it an “African...

    Beech drying / checking

Actually, I had thought that the spalting was in the wood originally. Did you cut the blanks prior to treating in the garden soil ? How much was in the wood prior to your treating ?
