Ed Hobbs - Passing of a Legend

I was really saddened to hear from Don Blair this morning about the passing of Ed Hobbs. As most of you know (or should know), we have Ed to thank for bringing us the modern lowering devices and arborist blocks. He brought us the Hobbs Lowering Device, Hobbs Blocks, Bry-Dan harness, etc. His...

    Proximity to the lowering device

Agreed. There's no reason to ever stand underneath any lowering device. Only come in when you need to take a wrap off.

    Maasdam Slipping

10 years later and still having problems with new Massdam pullers slipping and yes we only use hard lay 3 strand. The only way for it not to slip (at least under small loads) is to have someone tail the line for you. Once there is sufficient tension, than one person can pull on it alone...

    Dead ash

For sure. Dead Ash loses a lot of it's integral strength fast, compared to Oak and Maple. Becomes brittle and doesn't flex well, therefore making it harder to accomplish some technical hinging and swinging of limbs as you're rigging the tree out.

    Good deal on 3 strand?

Also makes a good natural crotch rigging line.

    Good deal on 3 strand?

If I'm not mistaken, one of my very first climbing lines from back in the 1980's was Arborplex and it had polyolefin in it. Was stiffer than Hell, but still better than manilla!

The Fundamentals of General Tree Work: 25th Anniversary Edition

I have so much respect for the old time highclimbers that I wanted my avatar to show that. I am a big collector of Finley's books and still subscribe to Loggers World monthly magazine to see how my West Coast brothas are doing!

The Fundamentals of General Tree Work: 25th Anniversary Edition

Hey Rico, thanks! That would be a painting of the late great Finley Hays who published Logger's World Magazine and wrote many fine logging books about the West Coast scene.

Jerry B is an awesome guy for sure. One of my good mentors and friends. I am writing an upcoming article about him, which will be in the TCIA Magazine this fall/winter. I'll put a link to it here.
