If you get the rope up high and don't leave a large hinge, put the hinge back and continue cutting the forces aren't that great.

If the tension is high you might consider a mechanical advantage.
Normally it should only take a few hundred pounds to pull a tree over, try moving your hinge back a bit.
I don't think it's a rope problem but more likely more tension than the winch design can handle.

It isn't any different than having a home owner cutting his own tree down and getting hurt.
If you are not trained to do the job by someone competent then chances are the risk is high.

Quartersawn is when the growth rings meet the face at no less than 45o.
Fully quartersawn is no less than 80o.
Quartersawn lumber will cup,dish and shrink less than plainsawn lumber.

You can get quarter sawn lumber from the entire log but there will be fewer wide boards than plain sawn.
The biggest problem for most mills is trying to dog an odd shape on a mill that is designed...
It might be the same wood but quartersaw lumber is labour intensive and that's what drives the cost up.

The key to taking those down is to leave lots of weight on the line, cut the tree way back at the base and work your way up.
When the tree stands straight up pull it off with a rope from a safe distance.
There's no need to put yourself that close to all that tension.
