Arbpro Evo2, Size 45, New in Box

Well I'm a sucker for a sale and bought these in July during TreeStuff's 20% off sale, figuring my current pair would last a few more months. Unfortunately, my wrist and ankle gave out before my shoes did, so these are now on the market. Size 45, literally never been out of the box, since I...

    In helmet communication systems

It is a pain to wire them, but you can stuff all the wires up above the padding in the Protos. I've never had twigs grab the wires with the configuration below. Also, the newer units come with a metal clip that slides over the edge of the helmet to hold on a plastic bracket. A nifty trick to...

    In helmet communication systems

We have been using Fodsports M1S models for several years. https://www.fodsports.com/m1s-pro/ They have improved them a lot during the last few iterations. They remain paired and don't need line of sight. Sometimes it is a minor hassle to get all paired together again if we have worked with...

    Career Dilemma

Another option not yet mentioned .... I entered the field at 60 after years in a job that didn't bruise me up, was better financially, built up a retirement account, and gave me resources to now enjoy tree climbing with fewer worries. I can buy the climbing goodies to make the job more fun and...

Cabling when a wound is near attachment point

Last year I was going to cable my Kansas brother's ponderosa pine but when I got there (500 miles away) noticed that there was a broken branch with some ripping on the leader on the compression side near the usual point of cabling. I took off the branch but decided to get more advice before...

    Opinions on Cuts

It does make sense. Is making it nearly horizontal particularly useful? I usually slant it back slightly so the cut holds the pick in a bit, but maybe that leads to more saw pinching on the second cut?

    Fall Force Calculator?

I'm right; Yale's wrong. What else do you need to know? (Just kidding.) But seriously, Yale is the only company I've found that provides rope specs in such an unusual fashion. My calculations and Yale's calculations won't disagree by much, and in the real world other factors will be more...

    Opinions on Cuts

Thanks. I think I got it. So the shelf cut is pretty much a v cut where the lower part of the v is nearly horizontal to hold the cut branch. Confusing to me since I often tell the crane operator how big of a "shelf" I'm leaving on a snap cut. Guess I should use the term "bypass" or "offset"...

    Opinions on Cuts

Finally! Been trying to find this type of info for a while. None of the magazine articles cover this much at all. Thanks. Could someone explain the difference between a snap and shelf cut? I figured they would be the same. Unless the shelf is part of the v??

    Fall Force Calculator?

Thanks. Twas very interesting (for a geek) reading. I am reluctant to quibble with Yale, but I really think their approach is a bit goofy. It is certainly possible to state the breaking strength of any rope in terms of energy; you just multiply the breaking force times the distance the rope...

    Fall Force Calculator?

In some cases, calculations are so complex that I just end up relying on calculators and trying to gain insight from various results. Finding the maximum stopping force in a given situation is such a case. But in response to your questions: 1 lb applied to a 1 foot lever = 1 foot-lb of moment...

    Fall Force Calculator?

Well, it is just a coincidence that in my example the value of the maximum stopping force in pounds is close to the value of the energy of free fall in foot-pounds. When I use 3 feet of free fall, the maximum stopping force is almost 4000 lbs, which is actually greater than the energy of 3000...

    Fall Force Calculator?

So you really ignited my inner physics geek and I just had to calculate some more realistic numbers for the case of a dead stop. This problem is very similar to a homework problem I used to give my physics students in which they had to calculate the maximum force on a rock climber who fell a...

    Fall Force Calculator?

If you use the stretch of the rope as the stopping distance, then the formula above works fine. If the elasticity of the rope is known, then that distance could be calculated as well, but as an estimate put something like 1 foot in for the stopping distance and watch the force get huge.

    Fall Force Calculator?

A lot of good physics insight in these responses, but some approaches aren't 100% right. The original hyper-physics link is correct, but for some goofy reason the distance of fall must include the entire distance fallen even after the rope starts pulling on it. Here is the correct formula, if...
