Carrying cabling gear in the canopy

I'll go up and drill one side, measure cable length, then cut ehs with angle grinder on the ground leaving foot or two extra length, install a rig guy on one end and go up and install cable on the drilled limb end pulling cable right thru, then install other end (use a come along and wire pull to move branches closer together a bit) .

Ed, I like that, installing the one rig guy on the ground. Makes a lot of sense, I'm going to try that. What are you using for a wire puller?

Just use a cable puller/ Havens Grip. A small set of fours does fine for most jobs. One thing though, it's sometimes a pain (especially on conifers) to get the cable started thru the limb. Sap again is your enemy esp with only about 1/16" clearance drilled hole to cable sometimes. I found that cheap olive oil on the first foot or two of the cable helps get thru the sap. Don't usually have this with trees like elms but sure do with spruce/ pines.

If I were setting up my installation kit today I’d add some Third Hands.

Add a tether to a rare earth magnet

One use would be to hold each strand of cable when cutting off extra tail. After cutting the cutoffs would go in a stuff sack or pouch so they don’t end up in the grass. The mag lanyards can be used to hang thimbles nuts or small tools.

Great idea - maybe something like Richard Mumford's magnets he used to sell for throwline magic would be nifty for that 'cuz they already have an eye on one end and are really strong permanent magnets. Tree gear stuff is iterative . . . . .

Looks like a hiking pack?

It's a 1990s-vintage 1st generation internal frame backpack topper. The back padding disintegrated so I salvaged the top section to use as a ditty bag at height.

We’ve used a 5gal with the storage sleeve/bucket-buddy organizer which is perfect once in position, but not the best for hauling up through brush.

They make shower cap drum covers that fit on top of 5 gal buckets. Perfect for keeping debris out of when sending aloft.

I use 5 gallon white plastic buckets. Wire handle converted to cord as in response above

There is a list of tool’s written on the side as a checklist. One bucket for cables and one for bracing. The SOP is to get the supplies before leaving the shop in. The morning
