Climbed some epic trees this week. Amazing properties, all waterfront and was a fantastic learning experience as well.Beautiful day for a climb, how do you like that flipline setup?

Cold as hell those two days. Its the Gyro Double. I'm on the fence. I won it so I'm grateful for that but I think I'd like the twin better. Truly to use the double efficiently and properly you either have to move it to the bridge or have both lead ends of the lanyard on the same d. That situation makes it kinda janky for knowing what one you're taking off. I found when I needed to triangulate with a double lanyard I was in a bad position and didn't have 2 hands to move everything around and reconfigure where it was on the saddle. So in an uncomfortable position it was even more difficult to get everything oriented correctly and work the lanyard one handed. I could see doing eagles and being stationary the double on the bridge would be great but in a moving scenario having it on the bridge gives me a bunch more movement and If I need to be closer to the tree I can only get as close as my bridge length allows. It's bulky. Lanyard management is difficult due to how the slack is between the 2 prussic. If you need a lot of lanyard you end up having to work each prussic at a time to get more slack. I think it's cool and has an application. I love my single but would like a twin to ride on the "movement in the canopy" saddle. I wouldn't have it on the removal harness. Not needed. Its cool kit but I'm still trying to decide what hitch they recommend that I like best. They all kinda bind up a little when I'm hanging hard in them. I'm in the relearning phase. I'm back to MRS on a hitch and learning how to climb all over again so I'm really deeply evaluating my gear and how I apply it. I'm not the same climber I was 7 years ago and largely I'm trying to determine if I can still make a fair living doing it.

This is the tree. Not me in the pic. We did 3" diameter end reduction on the long leads and cleaned out big dead and storm damage. Another couple beauties we cleaned 1" deadwood so I was truly able to root out everything inefficient in my gear and application pretty easily. Very different kind of climbing than I had been accustomed to. The mentorship I got these 2 days will never be forgotten.

I had the hook on me for this climb but didn't end up deploying it. I was an early adopter of the hook and used it a lot back when.......... Yes I was not an original SRS guy but I started on it with Rope wrench version 1 all silver when it first came out so I was on the cusp. Did mostly SRS for years after being in an a small group of folks who first put the wrench on zigzag version 1. I had this funny opinion going m=back to MRS was stepping back in skill and knowhow. I have come to realize how amazingly superior MRS can be for me in certain trees.

I have almost always been hybrid climber, and routinely switch back and forth within even the same quadrant of the same tree. every system has it strengths and weaknesses. Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.

I found in these last couple climbs the most efficient system was for us to both single up the access line and then pick out areas and reset the TIP as needed rather than work SRS and have to work the range of retrievable and non redirects. Also the limb walks were pretty outside my proficiency so I really needed that extra ability to best manage the slack in the system. A couple ponytail redirects and some terminal end redirects. My climbing partner is a world champion several times over who generally climbs MRS so its a terrific opportunity to learn some great tricks from him on that system. I'll be back up with him next friday. It's great but its a 2.5 hour drive each way for me. Luckily next Saturday I present at the national arboretum so I'll just leave the area I'm working and make a fairly short drive to the crapitol and get a room for the night. It's kinda fun restarting. The main thing I really want to hurry up and get here is the confidence. My brain is my biggest barrier at this point.
