The joke I got fired over

We were in a customers house, and the customer had some picture of something "weird" they had done, and they asked my coworker if he had a "weird sense of humor", to which he replied "sure". They showed it to him and he chuckled, so I asked if they liked dark humor, and rhey said they didn't know what that was, and I told the joke, as it kind of explains what dark humor is in the first place. I got a bunch of blank stares and quickly had to explain the joke, which is never fun or funny.

That's a joke that makes you think about the sad state of society. Don't see how it's racist or offensive. I would want the offended party to explain what was racist about. I would bet money the explanation is more racist than this joke.
I did get that from HR at my firing. He thought "dark" meant jokes about dark skinned people. According to HR, it doesn't matter what my intention was, but only how it is recieved.

Tell HR it sounds like they're firing you for being white. Smells like discrimination.

Don't actually do that. If you're going to lawyer it up, it's best to just go quietly without shaking the hornet's nest and let the lawyer do their thing.

My assumption was more racist than the joke. I'll see myself out.

I don't know when, but at some point in the future you will look back at this and realize you're in a better place professionally than what this ISP company could have provided. Gotta stand up for yourself though. If they were looking for a reason to let you go for trying to change the culture (not spiking live trees), they could have easily used this as that opportunity.

Judging by the reaction of your co-worker and the customer it appears they 'received' the joke as confusing, not offensive.

How can you get offended by something you don't comprehend?

Next time someone wants to know what dark humor is, just tell them to google and watch the comedy stylings of Anthony Jeselnik. His material is the purest definition of dark humor. I'm a huge fan.
